One flush only....:(
    #1342482 - 02/28/03 09:57 AM (18 years, 4 days ago)

My friends cakes had a strong first flush, and then never flushed again...its been weeks, and he's tried everything to try and get them to flush again, but got 2 small mushrooms. They are quite wet now.

maybe them first shrooms was hungry and took all the netrients, i bet it has something to do with temp, water, light, nutrients, humidity or air exchange, put all those in check and you should get more flushes

Interesting. I thought about that and wondered if contamination might be a problem. After your first flush you crumbled and cased your cakes?

I've read that a straight verm. layer doesn't always work that well. 50/50+ is a good casing, but it's very important that your moisture level is right: this guy I know has has farmed trich. twice so far on it. He's going to try Roadkill's coir/verm. casing next.

Posted by Anno a while back:

50/50+ Casing

mL of Peat Moss=150
mL of Vemiculite=150
mL of Hydrated Lime=0
mL of Crushed Limestone (chalk, calcium carbonate)=15
mL of Oyster Shell=15
Regarding water: The casing ingredients should be mixed in a bowl, then the water should be added. The correct water amount is reached when you take a handful of the casing mix, squeeze it in your hand (not too hard) and a few drops of water come out of it. That's the correct moisture level.

Yeah, my friend is quite familiar with the coir casing teks, thanks though. She just doesnt want to go on a search for coir at the moment...although i guess that will be her Saturday project. How much does it cost? Also...my she will be away from the 2nd until the 9th....could she just make a really thick casing layer...so it doesnt colonize and overlay while she's gone? Or is she SOL?

I don't know about an extra-thick casing layer. Could your friend have someone check on the progress while she's away...maybe even someone she trusts enough to fruit her casings?

Actually, if your friend cases sliced colonized cakes w/ crumbled uncolonized cake material, she might be ok to leave it for 7 days (w/ correct depth of casing layer). She still might want to have someone check on it, if she can.

DO NOT make an extra thick casing layer. follow directions exact for best results.don't worry about overlay

Im afraid she's not trusting enough to allow anyone to check on it while she's away. So you suggest she puts steralized BRF/Verm overtop of the sliced cakes, and then the casing layer? How thick should the uncolonized verm/brf layer be? Would you recommend using 7 cakes for 1, or 2 casings?

This guy I know cut his colonized cakes into 1/2" slices (bottom casing layer optional), "crumbled" uncolonized cake material around the slices and cased. This worked really well for him w/ a 50/50+ casing layer. Your cakes are half pint, correct? The amount of cakes/casing depends on the size of the containers you're using. The casing layer should be roughly 1/4 the depth of substrate (e.g., 2" substrate = 1/2" casing material). It will most likely take more that 7 days to colonize, so, your friend should be okay there.

I'd case it, wrap in saran, and leave it in a place without any light at room temp. When you get back, spray well with cold water and give it some light from above.
