Mexico nervous about California's Prop. 19 vote November 2, 2010 | 3:01 pm
Mexico, the country that supplies most of the marijuana used in the United States, is closely watching California's vote on Proposition 19, which would legalize possession of small amounts of the drug.
The government of President Felipe Calderon is worried that legalization would do nothing to stem the brutal drug cartel violence sweeping Mexico, while at the same time stoking demand. Other Mexicans, including a couple of former presidents, academics and others, favor the measure, hoping production in California would cut into the profits collected by the Mexican cartels.
Alejandro Poire, the government's security spokesman, reiterated its opposition Monday, reading a statement timed to coincide with the vote in California.
"Legalizing marijuana will not put an end to organized crime in Mexico and the wave of criminal violence threatening Mexicans … especially as a measure taken at a local, unilateral level," Poire said.
Calderon, in a recent interview with The Times, outlined his opposition to Prop. 19 as well. But that hasn't quieted a furious debate here in Mexico nor allayed tensions between this producing nation and that huge consumer to the north.
"Don’t be fooled. These groups [the cartels] have diversified their criminal actions to other offenses," including robbery, kidnapping and the trafficking of human beings, Poire said. "To think their harmful … violent behavior would end with legalization is simply a false premise."

Nothing significant will happen to cartel violence in Mexico, atleast until the US changes policies on the federal level.
But the idea that there will be increased demand, and this demand will be supplied to by cartels, is absolutely ludicrous.
On another note, once the cartels start losing money, they will expand into other areas such as kidnapping, prostitution, human trafficking, slavery, etc. This will probably get violent as they start grasping for control over whatever is left. However, this is no reason to continue the drug war, and definitely not a reason to increase prohibition and "send in teh troopz".

Being a Northern Californian, I seriously doubt that if this passes it has any effect on Mexico. I mean maybe in L.A. they're buying that shit Mexico weed but up here it's all great homegrown stuff. I think most of the weed Mexico exports gets moved to Arizona, Texas and other hot states that don't have any better options.

Absolutely agreed. The big difference here is, all of those illegal activities combined still won't amount to a fraction of the profits they are currently pulling in from the illegality of drugs. Bust after bust, they will see a greatly diminished supply of their once abundant weapons and armored vehicles. It will be harder for them to keep up once their main source of income dries up. The sooner prohibition is repealed the quicker they will begin to shrink in power.
