Prop 19 Backed By Tea Party

Prop 19 Backed By Tea Party By Alex Moore Tuesday, November 02, 2010
The Tea Party has friends in high places.
Conventional wisdom would have dictated that Tea Party candidates and voters would oppose California Prop 19, which would legalize marijuana in that state. While many of the state’s celebrity Twitter users took to the medium to encourage California to Legalize It, one would have expected the most influential Tea Partiers to heft every bit of sway into pooping on the prop 19 party.
After all, Tea Partiers are widely believed to be 2 things above all else: conservative, and undereducated. One would not suspect a candidate who doesn’t know the First Amendment stipulates a separation of church and state to possess the intellectual rigor required to stand consistent with a libertarian platform when it means your 14 year-old may start getting legal, easy access to weed.
But it appears the Tea Party may be doing exactly that. The Christian Science Monitor today runs an interview with Leo Laurence, a “former California sheriff’s deputy and currently a writer and pro-legalization activist at Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP).”
Of his own Tea Party skepticism, he says “I had written that the tea party would probably oppose it, but then I got phone calls saying, ‘No, you’re wrong on that.’ Tea party people have a very strong position that the government has no right to get involved in your private affairs … when you’re not hurting yourself or somebody else. And that’s basically Prop. 19 in a nutshell.”
What’s more, Republicans in general do not reflect the same sentiment. Prop 19 California polls indicate 65 percent of Republicans overall oppose proposition 19, as opposed to only 25 percent who support it. The split reflected in the poll numbers highlights a deeper rift between the Tea Party and other facets of the GOP establishment. Recently Karl Rove, scion of the Bush-era GOP establishment, insinuated Sarah Palin was unfit to hold the office of the president. Yesterday, Palin called the GOP institution that would seek to discredit her “sleazy,” all while her Sarah Palin PAC donates significant funds to these very same “sleazy” candidates.
The Tea Party may be in a bit of an identity crisis, and they may well inherit the dominant power structure from incumbent Republicans, themselves becoming the “GOP establishment.” If that happens, it will be a bummer for those of us on the left. But hey, at least we’ll be able to spark up a J in peace.

The tea party is still a dangerous, racist, fascist movement. They probably support it so they have a chance of gaining more liberal voters. And maybe so when we wind up with no rights, being/staying stoned is all we'll have left. Not good enough to fool me.

I honestly believe that the tea party has their head in the right place, just not the right people. The blatant bigotry of their supporters and the so far lack of acceptable candidates is the only thing wrong.
Maybe this is a step in the right direction. Personal freedom ftw

Dude seriously dangerous and racist fascist... Who are you garafalo? You really need to turn off MS-NBC and do some of your own research. I guess when your head is that left there probably isn't much help for you. I would have to say the real racist reside in the progressive left. Oh hell go smoke a joint and keep believing what the leftist pundits say.

Lol @ people liking the Tea Party all of the sudden.
I agree with 5-HT2A, they're a pretty dangerous group. Anybody who has their head that far up Glenn Beck's and Sarah Palin's collective ass is clearly not thinking for themselves (although I can guarantee they think they are).
Please, these are the same people that think Obama is still a Muslim terrorist.
Cool, they support prop 19, probably a political move to gain more support, but that doesn't excuse the rest of their ridiculous "one nation under god" bullshit.
Don't worry Jerrylove, I don't watch MSNBC or any other news network for that matter. If I'm looking for comedy, I'll occasionally flip on Fox News.
I don't think I'm very aligned with either side of the political divide at this point, but it doesn't take much observation to figure out the Tea Party is a goddamn joke.

What the fuck is dangerous, racist and fascist about having more freedoms and getting rid of these taxes? No rights!? The tea party wants a SMALLER government, it's the liberals who want a bigger more oppressive nanny state. This is about getting back to the constitution our framers set up.
If you think that anyone who doesnt want to give their hard earned cash to people who arent pulling their own weight is racist then you are the true racist for assuming that anyone who isnt pulling their own weight is of a particular race.

If the source of law is the ontological Trinity of Christian revelation, then that Trinity is the God of that culture. If the source of law rests in the people, then the voice of the people is the voice of God (vox populi, vox dei), and that voice finds expression and incarnation either in a leader, a legislative body, or a supreme court, depending on which gains the ascendency. The highest point in the processes of law is the god of that system...

Alexander Tyler said: A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.
It would be ironic for minorities to think they can have political influence (over many) without taking individual responsibility (for themselves).
The most racist supposition is that minorities need a zookeeper, and I don't believe that proponents of a limited government are making that assumption.

What might happen is the republicans claiming positions which the tea party support, in order to steal votes from them. I hope marijuana legalization is endorsed by a major party soon.

Respectfully, this native "weed" would be taxed and regulated, in order to support the globalist cause.
The Founding Fathers of this country claimed to be against entangling, foreign alliances, which would compromise the sovereignty of individual nations.
This makes prop 19 antithetical to the spirit of the Tea Party, originally a demonstration against taxation.

It would be taxed and regulated if the liberals got ahold of it, but if the libertarians/teaparty/constitutionparty/etc got ahold of it this wouldnt happen. I dont think it should be taxed or regulated, beyond keeping that dirty mexican pot OUT.
