60/40 Verm and Coco Coir Casing Tek * 1
    #1308057 - 02/14/03 11:17 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

I decided to write up how to make up a simple casing layer tek on using Verm and Coco Coir.

Your gonna need some Vermiculite, Coco Coir, a large mixing bowl, a large spoon, and a microwaveable dish.

We are going to be using some Forest Bed brand of Coco Coir for this casing material.

Break off a few small peices of Coco Coir and put them into the large mixing bowl.

You will be adding hot water to the Coco Coir to make it expand.
After it expands it will look like this.

Then you add your Vermiculite. Add a little more Verm than Coco Coir.

After adding the Vermiculite to the expanded Coco Coir mix it in really good.
You might need to add more water.
After you get it mixed up good it will look like this.

You then take your 60/40 casing material out of the large mixing bowl and put it in a microwaveable dish.
I really like mine!

Clean the inside of your microwave out...use bleachy water.
Then spray the inside with Lysol.
You want to microwave your 60/40 casing material in the microwave for 5 minutes.
Spray the air out side the microwave with Lysol.
Pull the container out of the microwave and stirr up the casing material with a clean utensil.
Put it back in the microwave...and nuke it for another 5 minutes.

Let the casing material cool down in the microwave oven...I usually wait an hour.

Spray the air with Lysol.
Pull the container out of the microwave oven.
Wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap.
Take the lid off the microwave safe dish and feel the moisture level of the casing material.
You should only be able to squeeze out a few drops of water...that is the moisture level that you want.
Apply the casing material to your substrate.
Then cover both containers to keep contams out.

Fin!

not to be a dick but its as simple as it sounds.
you put #1 together with #2 and you get = the mixture.
my cats ass doesnt even bother to measure out the perfect mixture, he just slaps it together using always more than enough coco.
Yet this is my opinion> all i was sayin is your trying to tell a 3 yr old to mix a & b together, "meaning" there is no Tek to mixing verm and coco.
Now if i wanted to make one (which i wont) i could call it the 65 coco/35 verm Tek.

Then don't be a dickhead!~

I'm trying to help people that are always asking how to make a casing layer...or that are asking how to use Coco Coir.

I get tired of repeating myself over and over again.

So I wrote it up!

Is that alright with you?
Nevermind your opinion doesn't count!~

Much appreciated, I am telling my friend in Belgium to do this, he says that he has been using straight verm, but is pretty sure he was fucking up moisture content> He was pretty interested in the coir and will get down to it next time thanks to this.

A few points that you should clarify. Is it 60% vermiculite or 60% Coco Coir? Also are you talking 60/40 by weight or volume? About how much H2O are you adding to the compressed Coco Coir (pictures don't do a very good job of capturing moisture content)?

I realize that this is a simple tek but being very clear helps reduce the repeat questions on the boards (I assume that is your goal with the write-up).

Thanks for the great write-up.

I'm nobody.

Volume.

>(pictures don't do a very good job of capturing moisture content)?

That?s why you are supposed to test it via the squeeze method.

Road.... when you say this, do you mean a casual squeeze, or like a fricking SQUEEZE. I know i am getting picky, but casing is still tricky for me  I assume you mean you should only get a few drops no ma tter how hard you squeeze. Sorry again for getting so  picky !

Great stuff - a character in a book I'm writing did their first casing with this today, and I'm glad I wrote about him doing something accurately.
