Covering incubation holes
    #1341944 - 02/28/03 04:56 AM (15 years, 2 months ago)

After sterilizing the kerr jars in the pressure cooker, when I remove them, should I immediately cover the 4 holes in each lid with something to prevent contamination before inoculation? After inoculation should I cover the holes again with something to prevent contamination? What would be the best to cover the holes? Thanks.

yes i even have them covered during sterilsation. If you use micro pore medical tape you can inject straight through that then put another layer over after you remove the needle.

use masking tape to cover the holes then cover the lids with aluminum foil, all before sterilizing.

If using verm seal, cover till 50% colonized, then take off to let them breathe. This will increase the speed of colonization.

Does it matter whether the jars are colonized 50 percent from the bottom or from the top? I noticed quicker growth on a jar I messed up on in which i left the holes uncovered.
