double casing layer?
    #1341004 - 02/27/03 04:37 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

would this work any better then a single? Maybe even make a tripple casing layer? this is what i mean I tried a single and it kinda sucked out for me. Will the mycelium take nutrients all the way from the bottum cakes to the shrooms on top? Thanks.

No. The point of a casing layer is to retain moisture and protect the substrate from contamination. Putting additional layers of casing material inside of the substrate serves no purpose.

it wont colonize all the 50/50? i thought that was the point of putting it on there so it will colonize and use nutrients from it.

A casing layer is by definition non-nutritious. The mycelium draws nutrients from the substrate.

It retains more water for the mycelium to use, and keeps contams out.

The deeper the substrate depth the better, and a minimum of a 1 inch casing layer is required for maximum yeilds in a deep (more than 3" thick) substrate level. An ideal casing would look something like this:

[~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~] - 50/50 mix
[~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~] - 50/50 mix
[===][===][===][===][===][===][===][====] - Cakes
[===][===][===][===][===][===][===][====] - Cakes
[===][===][===][===][===][===][===][====] - Cakes
[===][===][===][===][===][===][===][====] - Cakes
[===][===][===][===][===][===][===][====] - Cakes
[&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&} - Vermiculite

You don't even really need the bottom layer.
Doubling layers will likely do nothing but maybe take longer to fruit thus higher risk for contamination

indeed... this casings aren't one of those "more the merrier" type things. Memorize the casing FAQ and you will be fine
