Post office.

No questions.  It's legit anyway.  Says "microscopy kit".  Even has a glass microscope slide.

Although at first they gave me the wrong package.  I got home and saw the label, and it said "ladies polyester underpants" or some shit :rofldrunk:

If its from the EU your fine. If its from outside the EU and valued at over £40(£ not $) You have to pay VAT and an 8 quid handling fee to the Post Office. They leave a red slip through your door telling you that you need to go in and pay for it before you can have it yada yada.

Yeah I'm not happy about it tbh, but the dude was sending me 90 bags and 20 filter disks for free so what can I do?

I was planning on sending him some slants to help him get going anyways. Cost him 40 bucks to send it as it is.

I was going to have a thanksgiving give away for some of em. Might still do.

Wow, I've ordered tons of stuff from the states and never paid a penny in VAT etc, unlucky guys.

Base I LOVE the idea of a UK only Thanksgiving thread, I miss that holiday every year.  :congrats:

You don't have to pay VAT on anything that comes in from outside the EU with a value under £40.

Dude that's sending didn't know any better and didn't know we had to pay VAT of stuff incoming :blah:

My list of grow supplies. [Re: Ego Questio] * 1
    #13421778 - 11/02/10 02:51 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

This post is fantastic with some really great sources of various items. Here is a list of the equipment and materials I bought and where I got it all from. This list is for equipment use in the PF Tek.

Spore Prints

Free Spore Ring Earth - This is a fantastic source for spore prints and all it costs it €1 per print which is just for the postage. They have a large number of different strains available too. All they ask is that when you have picked your first crop, you make a spore print and post it back to them so that it may be posted on to other people.

Syringes & Needles

100 Syringes @ Medisave.co.uk - I bought the cheapest syringes from Medisave since I was looking to keep costs low at least until I have had success a few times over. Then I will probably get slightly more expensive syringes (known as Leur-Lok).

100 Needles @ Medisave.co.uk - I personally bought the 1.5 inch needles but after receiving and using them, I found them to be slightly too short so I've linked the 2 inch ones here.

Distilled/Deionized Water

Scan.co.uk - When you are making up your syringes from your spore print, it is vital to ensure that you have the purest water available. This is because the spores are very delicate and mixing them with normal UK tap water is not really recommended due to the hardness of the water. This bi-distilled water is actually used as coolant in computer CPU water coolers but it's perfect for making syringes. It is a little pricey once you include delivery but well worth it.

Halfords - For those of you that would prefer to keep costs as low as possible, deionized water makes a suitable substitute. The only reason why it is not a first choice is because distilled water is also free of all micro organisms where this cannot be guaranteed with deionized water although this can be solved by putting a small amount (50-70ml) into a jar (which I will get to soon) and sterilise it like you would a jar with substrate in it.

Inoculation Loop

eBay - Inoculation loops are used when mixing the spores with the distilled water. Using the tip of a syringe needle is strongly advised against as it can damage many of the spores and this will result in a lower yield. These inoculation loops from ebay are disposable and there I'm not sure how many are left for sale. If they become unavailable, the only other one I have been able to find is here:

Cole Palmer - This is a non-disposable inoculation loop and is considerably more expensive but worth it in the long run.

Sterile Gloves

On Call Medical Supplies - To ensure that extra level of sanitation, I bought individually packed sterile latex gloves. For those who are allergic to latex click here for sterile nitrile gloves.

Painter's Overalls

eBay - Painter's disposable overalls are perfect to ensure that you minimize the chance of contamination. eBay is probably the best bet as far as price and choice goes but these can be bought at B&Q as well for a decent price.

Surgical Spirits

eBay - Surgical spirits is used to sanitize pretty much everything during your mushroom cultivation process.

½ Pint Jam Jars

Jam Jar Shop - This was by far the most difficult item to find. I ended up buying from 3 different sources and only the third one had jars with no shoulder, ie. the mouth of the jar is the widest part thus allowing the cake to be removed easily. These are fantastic because they are not only the perfect size but they are really cheap AND include lids which some places do not.

Philip Morris & Son - The best jars are ½ pint glass jars with metal lids. These jars are slightly bigger (½ litre) and have plastic lids but they will do the trick. The price including postage is around the same as The Jam Jar Shop so technically it's better value for money but ½ pint jars are recommended as ½ litre jars are more likely to end up contaminated.

Brown Rice Flour

BuyWholeFoodsOnline.co.uk - Brown rice flour is mixed in with the vermiculite and water to make up the substrate that is then put in the jars. I personally bought organic brown rice flour as this ensures that there are no foreign chemicals in the substrate. I have read that this is not entirely necessary though. Although I found 5kg for £3 cheaper elsewhere, this online store was personally recommended buy a friend who has been doing this for a few years. Oh, 5kg should last about a year.

Vermiculite & Perlite

Vermiculite @ B&Q - Used to ensure the substrate is well aired when it is put in the jars. Without it, colonization is practically impossible. It's cheap as chips and a 10 litre bag goes a long way.

Perlite @ B&Q - Used when fruiting you PF cakes. I found that a whole bag is used in my fruiting box. It can be reused if you bake it dry when you have finished your flushes but at £5 a bag, you might as well just buy a new bag.

Plastic Boxes (used as a glove box and fruiting chamber)

Plastic Boxes @ Ikea - These are 130 litre plastic boxes that I use for a fruiting chamber by drilling loads of holes in the 4 sides. This allows for better gas exchange. I also use a second one as a glove box bu cutting 2 CD sized holes in the side. Just a warning though, this plastic is a real bitch to cut through with a bladed instrument like a utility knife or hacksaw blade and so I eventually used a drill machine and drilled LOADS of holes right next to each other in the shape of a ring.

Plastic Lids @ Ikea - The one problem with these boxes is they do not come with a lid. Here is a link to the lids. Overall, each box costs £14 which is a bit steep but the quality of these Ikea ones is just top class.

Spray Bottles

Click Cleaning - I use these to mist water onto the PF cakes when they are in the fruiting chamber as well as spraying surgical spirits onto the gloves and insides of the glove box when I am sterilizing the environment.

**********************************************************************************************************

Well, I hope this list help you get your mushroom cultivation off the ground.

Happy growing.

Cryo

Yeah I had some annoying little black buggers last year. I think they like the casing layer if it's peat moss based. It's part of the reason I'm trying no casing at the moment, also no trays. I don't think there's a safe way of killing them. Wait for a break in your grow if you can and just throw out anything organic that might have them or their eggs on. Obviously a PC will kill them but it won't stop cross contamination from other substrates/casings that are already infested.

I don't think they do much harm but they really get irritating after killing several hundred a day. One thing that did work was pumping a mist of ISO alcohol past a lighter in their direction. Extreme but effective, my GH wasn't quite the same shape after.....

Fly strips worked pretty well for me. I had them in a 2 month old msg. They loved it in there. Also had then trying to live in the soil of the plants that I just put in my room. Then they crawled into my pf jars and that was the end of that.

I threw everything out and fly strips everywhere in my room. seemed to wide them out alright.

On a lighter note, I got those bags with out having to pay and thing.
