A British man died after poisoning himself with two spoonfuls of caffeine powder bought over the internet, local media reported Friday.

Michael Lee Bedford, 23, from Mansfield, central England, was at a party in April when he swallowed caffeine powder that a friend bought online for £3.29 ($5.26), Nottingham Coroner’s Court heard Thursday.

He washed the powder down with an energy drink, and around 15 minutes later began sweating and vomiting blood. He later died at King’s Mill Hospital in Nottinghamshire, central England, the Nottingham Post reported.

The court heard that Bedford ignored the product's recommendation to take no more than one sixteenth of a teaspoon and instead took two spoonfuls of the powder -- ingesting a level of caffeine 70 times more than is usually found in a high-energy drink.

Speaking outside the court, Bedford’s aunt Sue Burton said, "I think there should be a warning on it saying it can kill."

Nottingham Coroner Dr. Nigel Chapman said, "Caffeine is so freely available on the internet for £3.29, but it's so lethal if taken in the wrong dose, and here we see the consequence. So many people are upset and distraught by the death of Michael."

He also criticized the product, which was not named in the inquest, for recommending such a small dosage, which could be easily ignored. "Who would take [one sixteenth of a teaspoon]? It's such a small dosage -- the warning is so small on the front of it," Chapman said. "If you're sharing a bag, carrying it around, and if you hadn't seen the warning -- it could be that anyone at the party could have taken it. It's so dangerous to take something like this."

He recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Why would he do that? If it wasn't the caffeine he would have killed himself another way, I suppose. It's a miracle he managed to live this long.

That was a compounding form. We have stuff here that is like that, so it fits in formulas that go in caps, pills etc.
Sad deal but he did rather do it to himself. I agree with a larger warning label. I do not need one, but when you put out stuff that has maybe hundreds of times the lethal dose in a bottle and anyone can buy it, it needs BIGGER, better info.
...and there will, unfortunately, always be one of those poor guys no matter what you do.

A HS friend of mine OD'd on caffeine pills once. He ate an entire box of vivarin.

He said ran around screaming saying he couldnt think and then finally laid down when he said he could only see yellow.

First of all, Michael sounds like an idiot.  Maybe he'll get a Darwin Award.

Of course caffeine is lethal in the wrong dose.  Just about everything under the sun except marijuana and hallucinogens are.

AS for Nigel Chapman... ""Who would take [one sixteenth of a teaspoon]?".
Anyone who read the fucking directions.

Juxtapose this story with the recent mephedrone ban. Two stimulants, two bitter white powders, death in overdose. No reasonable person would conclude from this caffeine overdose that coffee or soda should be banned. Maybe the pure powder should be controlled, because lethal overdosing is possible, but in diluted form these stimulants are really safe.

I'd like to see a mephedrone energy drink - 100mgs per can.

How can you criticize a small dosage? It's a pure chemical. Good god people. This is just another darwin award.

I'm sure tons of people on shroomery have powders with small dosages but you don't see anyone swallowing the whole bag (unless you want a year long psychosis).
