[TX] Man with 8 DWI convictions sentenced to life

Déjà vu ...

Man with 8 DWI convictions sentenced to life
October 28, 2010 - ABC13

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Montgomery County jury Wednesday sentenced a man with eight drunk driving convictions to life in prison.

The jury deliberated for a few hours before finding George Lee Harvey guilty. Prosecutors stated Harvey was a habitual offender with two prior trips to the penitentiary thereby making his punishment range 25 years to life in prison.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Harvey has eight convictions for driving while intoxicated as well as a conviction for possession of marijuana and a driving while license suspended.

According to prosecutors, Harvey was backing out of his driveway with his headlights off on April 3, 2009 just before midnight on FM 1485 and Kings Rd. in New Caney when another drunk driver struck his vehicle.

Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputies and Department of Public Safety responded to the scene to investigate the crash. Officers say Harvey had extremely slurred speech and told the officers on scene to take him to jail. Prosecutors said that he had trouble walking and had to be assisted by the trooper.

Harvey also was alleged to tell the trooper that he had been drinking for three days and had drank "everything you can imagine" including "whiskey, wine, and women." Harvey refused to perform field sobriety tests and give a breath sample.

The other driver that hit the defendant plead guilty to a DWI on August 27, 2009.

:huxleyfacepalm: I guess a drunk driver hitting another drunk driver is better than plowing into a family of kids coming home from church.

I have no sympathy for the man. He drank and got behind the wheel, and got caught 8 times. Enough is enough.

^ That. No more needs to be said. Why complain about trying to protect society from a loose cannon.

Bullshit. You know nothing of this man's life.

The fact that there are no tax-payer funded drunk taxis speaks for itself. Instead, society says "let's hurt the people who drink because they hurt so maybe they'll stop driving while they're drunk and not hurting."

As opposed to understanding them and helping them. When's the last time Texas was nominated for enlightenment?

Furthermore, I have personally drove drunk way more than 8 times. Should I be put in prison forever? Has this guy ever seriously hurt somebody? And why did they even give him his license back so many times? It says he only has 1 license suspended conviction.

These people are sick, they're not criminals. Humans don't know how to take care of each other, period.

 I've driven drunk before. I haven't made a habit of it and I do not do it anymore. The fact that this guy has been caught 8 times leads one to believe that he has done this many more times. The story is missing some details. I will agree that there needs to be means to deter someone from doing this eight times. He should have had his licensed permanently revoked. But I don't believe this would have stopped him from driving impaired.

IMO this is similar to firing a gun randomly in a neighborhood. You might not hit anyone, but it still isn't something that should be allowed. In addition, if you are discovered doing this then should and would go to jail.

Finally, whether or not Texas is an enlightened states isn't that relevant here. This isn't a case of them executing a mentally handicapped person. It's a drunk being sentenced to life so he can't kill someone.

Yes, his alcoholism should have been treated. But THAT and the fact that he got behind the wheel - quite obviously all the time - while drunk are two completely different pair of shoes. He could have drunken himself to death in his own home and that would be entirely his own affair, but as soon as he drives around drunk it becomes my affair as well, as he might just run over my kids while they are on their way home from elementary school.
"Ah, sorry officer, I didn't mean to kill those kids, I am just a poor sick man. I am sure you understand". Fuck that shit, mang.

Why not give him a chance to waive his property rights and give up his car before taking his life(basically)?

Either way, he's a dumbass- consider that he was leaving his house drunk, instead of just trying to get home drunk.

Smoke weed. :jah:

(edit: not condoning drunk driving in any circumstances, just pointing out that his night of mayhem had most likely just begun)

I'd like to see what a well-designed mass transit system does to the amount of people getting DUI's...  But I don't think that's as profitable for the state, now is it?

Again, he should be charged on a scale, according to tangible damage caused, if any.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, toward preferential credit, I am guessing that most people on the road would not be able to participate in car ownership outrightly, based solely on their present material usefulness to society.

This may sound very controversial to anyone who has bothered to follow it, but I would like you to consider this person as your employer, professor, landlord, or bureaucrat.

This is a person who has been given privileges and opportunities, first in buying something he can't afford, lastly in being handed food and shelter for the rest of his unproductive life.

Where did you suppose a govt gets money? Does it create or take it?
