computer fan into shotgun terrarium?
    #13397918 - 10/27/10 10:30 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I'm gonna be getting the supplies to start growing soon and was wondering if putting a computer fan on the bottom of the terrarium would be a good idea for fresh air. I'm going to be using the shotgun terrarium so I would have perlite at the bottom of the container but I have a concern that the fan will dry out the perlite? What should I do to comensate for fresh air besides opening the container?

No need. Drill all the holes all the way around all six sides, that'll do it.

if once you make the shotgun FAE is still an issue you can place a fan in the same room as it to help move the air around the room. probably not pointed directly at it.

As mentioned, a properly built shotgun does not need any automated air. Besides being impractical, it uses more electricity and is a potential fire hazard.

Placing a computer fan underneath your fruiting chamber will dry out your perlite and create low humidity inside of your fruiting chamber.  A shotgun terrarium, designed per the tek, will maintain proper humidity, as well as, receive ample amounts of fresh air.  To encourage air flow from the bottom of your fruiting chamber, place your fruiting chamber on blocks with a small oscillating fan in the room on a timer to come on every 15 minutes per hour.  Be sure as to not point the fan directly at your fruiting chamber.  You will still need to mist then fan to compensate for the evaporation of moisture from your substrate, as well as, fan to displace carbon dioxide build-up, replacing the carbon dioxide build up with oxygen.  For your first few go arounds with with the shot gun terrarium, build the fruiting chamber to specks.  Get a feel for how the fruiting chamber behaves in your environment before automating your fruiting chamber.

:nono: No fan. Holes on all six sides and natural air currents. That's enough.

I too had humidity problems when placing computer fans humidifiers near and around my shotgun.

On the otherhand, I did place a computer fan blowing directly into my PmP. The idea was to simulate weak fanning. With a bit of humidity cycling, for species like Shiitake/Reishi.

I have it set up on a timer, 15min on, 1hour 45 min off. And I tweak it from time to time to get the results I desire.

The fan is very weak. It is a CPU fan running at 40% speed. It is also placed in a pseudo plenum further restricting the airflow... at the same time it restricts humidity bleeding.

Its a balancing act. fanning/evaporation of substrate is necessary WHILE maintaining 95-100% humidity. Temperature also plays a role in both evap and humidity.

With my setup I believe the humidity supplied by the airstones submerged in perlite is soo excessive that I can afford to blow fresh dry air in (My humidity briefly drops 1-5%, then quickly regains that humidity). A Shotgun on the otherhand is perfectly balanced already. It can be easily unbalanced by by additional direct airflow/vacuum etc. I would suggest: Oscillating fan or Ceiling fan in the room shotgun is in. This alone can greatly increase both fresh air and evaporation of substrate... just have to play with it.

I have a similar setup to this, a TIT (fishtank heater with a thermo in between) with a computer fan mounted into the side on a timer.  I've had good results with it.

It's not a shotgun though.  I wouldn't mess with that formula.

I'm experimenting with a small fan about 2 feet away blowing in the general direction of my shotguns, on a time for 15 mins every 2 hours.

No need to fan manually

Not to highjack here but i always wondered how exactly do you make a cumputer fan run without using a computer? would i need to use a spare power supply?

No you just need a 12 volt power source which is the same voltage as a computer power supply.

If you have a spare power supply, you can use a paperclip to trick the power supply into thinking a computer is on. Just put one end of the paperclip into the hole with the green wire going to it and the other end into the hole next to it with the black wire (actually, I think it can be any black wire, but this is what I usually do).

I never said it couldn't be done. I just don't think it's the best idea to suggest people start poking around the power supply with a paperclip to see if it will turn on.

Look in your PSU's manual for specs or use a meter.

I've electrocuted myself multiple times over a wall socket back in high school! 4Nd I Tu2n3d 0u7 juz fines!

Seriously though, it works if you do it right, just dont have it plugged in while you're touching any bare wire, it'll give you a good constant shock until someone pulls it out of your hand...

Easy one... like everything is easy if you know...

Computer fans run on Direct Current. You do not need a full computer PSU to use it. The fan will rotate at maximum speed at 12V DC which is too high for fanning a chamber.

What I do is use a mobile(cell) phone charger, the one I use is 4.5V DC, I cut the phone connection off the supply wire and solder the +(red) wire to the +(red) wire of the fan. I do the same with the -(negative) wire.

A quality computer fan should just about run (slower) around 5V. Some computer fans will not start until around 7Volts.

Your power source (in my case a phone charger) must be DC (Direct Current).

Using such a low voltage around or inside a terrarium presents zero danger and if any electrical source short circuits or burns etc. your Residual Current Device for your house will cut the power supply in milliseconds. In my country these are a mandatory requirement for modern dwellings. You can also buy RCD's (Residual Current Devices) to plug into your electrical socket and you plug your equipment into these.

If you are American Walmart should sell these or go to any electrical shop for advice.

PC fans run on either 5v dc or 12v dc, any dc battery will make any dc fan move, the more voltage that is applied, that faster it spins.
