Best power steamer for pasteurizer?

I'm getting ready to build a bulk steam pasteurizer and was wondering what, currently, is the best steamer for the job? I will be using half - two thirds of a 55 gallon plastic food barrel for the chamber. I read that the Wagner 705 power steamer is the best but that was an older post. Is the Wagner for removing wall paper? Thanks for any help........MM

You can pick up Commercial steam generators off ebay that come from places like hospitals... I recently saw a post of someone pasturizing in three 55 gallon drums... Beautiful setup...once i get some land im gonna rock that out

Sorry to bump like this...
While looking on eBay, i found some "steam bath" steam generators for those new age steam showers... they are VERY reasonably priced and i bet they will work well since your not putting the steam under pressure! I bet THIS ONE is a pasteurizers dream!
good luck total

Im not sure... Maybe a plumber with experience with these could tell you how much steam they put out... Since they have a continuous water supply, it might be enough for a couple of 55gal drums I just figured your gonna spend $100 on a wagner, get something that might be upgradable

100lbs or so lbs at a time in a 55gal rubbermaid
I use this

30 min to heat up but then after that its just steams the shit out of stuff, you do have to refill it right in the middle of everything so piping in a gravity fed watersupply that is a bit more in volume will get you through the process no refills
705=win every time, the 905 is power on demand and isnt all that great because of that.
705 is cheap and it just works

I will probably want to steam about 50 - 75#s at a time. Probably three 25# bags/pillow cases full at a time. I may end up using the whole barrel but space is a problem so I wanted to cut it down a little. How long does it take to steam a 25# bag o crap ?
Are these for use outdoors only? Can you use it in a garage/shop ?
I made up some plans for a good, very well sealed, door that won't leak, not much anyway. I'm going to lay it on it's side and make a square door in the round end cap. This is where I wish it was a steel drum with a clamping band end for the door, but I already have this heavy duty plastic barrel so I am going to use it. I will have copper for the plumbing and utilize an extra "heating loop" like I read in another tek. I can always remove the heating loop if it's not neccesary. There will be a couple different valves and tees to direct the steam where I want it and adjust the levels so I can mantain the proper temps. There will be a valve on top for pressure relief and one on bottom for drainage.(may only need the one on bottom) If I am leaving anything out please let me know. I'm sure the end product will be different from the initial plans, as these things always go through a trial and error period. Thanks for all your help..........MM

I am unsure of your space requirements. I use a 5 day Coleman cooler with the Wagner 705. If I had the space I would definitely go with a "dead" upright freezer, in honor of agar. He was the coolest dude I never got to meet.
This one is sweet

And then this one (similar to above), just a little different take on it.

If your going to use the Wagner, make sure its a free flowing system. There is a yellow piece of rubber on the top of the steamer that will pop up if there is too much pressure.
I am unsure of how much pressure it takes, but you can lift it with your fingers very easily. I recommend against the pillow cases with anything other than straw. I buy the 1 gal bags from WalMart, that way I can get my sub to field capacity before I pasteurize. Other wise I have to Pasteurize, wait for it to cool, than squeeze and play with it until its right. With bags I just steam, cool, empty into tub and done!
Also, you could make your barrel like a big dehydrator.(as far as shelving system, not actually to dry anything) Get some racks, start at the bottom with your bags. As soon as one shelf is full, put another one on top and so on and so forth. Put a copper pipe up the middle for more even heat. Just a thought.
Garage should be fine. Moisture will be high though. And hot dirt smells... umm.... unique.

Allright, I have changed everything and here's the new plan. I'm going to use the whole barrel and a pc of plywood for the round(full 2' diameter) door which will be the top. The barrel will sit upright, on it's end and I will have a bottom rack and then add racks as I add bags of substrate. I found a place in the yard where this will work so space is not as much of a problem. It is still a requirement though.
Question: Do I need the extra heat bar like in this tek ???http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13100587
That is the only variable left, as soon as I get an answer I'm off to Homey Depot for the parts. Thanks again..........MM

make sure you get some probe meat thermometers
that way you can have the probe in the middle of the bag , but the display outside of the unit that way you can monitor the temps
getting the right size bag, putting in the right amount of substrate , is a art
plus i learnt that i need to make sure the substrate in the bag is really thing and spread out so it doesent take a long time getting up to heat

I have a remote sensor thermometer already so I just need a couple of regular thermometers to go in the side and top of the barrel.
Jokefox, don't I just fill up the bags with poo at field capacity? Where is the "art" ? Do you mean it will just take practice to get it right?
You guys are saying to use plastic bags, won't the plastic get in the way since it isn't permeable?......MM

Are these weather thermometers? Odds are they will fail on your at higher temps if they are... A long meat probe would be better...Atleast a wireless meat thermometer

No, it's for cooking meat, it's the right tool. I've been using it when using the pillow case/boiling method. I'm off to get the parts

I use the remote meat thermoter (with probe) with a built in timer. Really helps out! I also use the thermometers in the lid. I power wash my cooler when I'm done and have taken this to wedding showers and family get together at the state parks where they have power, people love my portable steam table to keep food hot.
The art, at least for me, with the bags is getting the same amount of sub in each bag. Field capacity is also a skill learned with time.
And as far as the plastic being permeable, I am not sure what you mean. If you mean not letting the steam into the poo (or whatever) It's not the steam that directly pasteurizes the poo. Its the heat from the steam. I come from 2 generations of Dean's Foods workers, and my grandpa worked in the pasteurizer room. It was just a huge vat of milk with all these pipes it forced the milk through. The pipes have other pipes running over them , in a "curly q" pattern. Heats the milk via radiant heat. He had some scarred up arms from that place. Like a huge boiler. And I agree with the guy below me. Like a turkey, bigger the bags the longer it takes to get them up to temp. All I can stress if even filling. I have used plastic since day 1, no contams at substrate level as of yet.
And the heat bar in the tek (that's my cooler in the tek) I feel its needed. I use both when I fire it (Wagner 705) up, increased heat up time by 100%. When I turn it on, it dumps all the extra steam into the cooler (in your case barrel) Then when its up to temp, I bypass that pipe and it runs the steam through only the "heat" pipe, which dumps 90% of the steam out into the atmosphere. I have redone that cooler since I posted pics of it, but it is basically the same. Just used a tube bender and put a shelf in. Make it pretty you know. I'll post more pics tomorrow, in case anything strikes your fancy.

you need a probe to stick inside of the poo so you dont have to open the device to check the bag then wait for it all to heat up again
if you dont believe me go a head and fail
second use burlap , you can wash it and it will let extra water drip out
third, you cant put a hole lot of shit inside the bag , think of a turkey , takes a long time to cook cause its dense ,compared to a carrot
this pasteurization devices arent clear cut , you will need to tweak , dry run , test run
its hard shit
