Mother: I'd rather my kids used
cannabis than alcohol
October 26, 2010 - telegraph.co.uk
Kristin Nicholas is a mother of two. She is active in her children's
school life and contributes to her church community. She also smokes
marijuana and tells Alastair Good that she would not discourage her
children from smoking it when they are older.
While most mothers accept that their children will experiment with
alcohol at some point, they would draw the line at illegal drugs.
Mother of two Kristin Nicholas disagrees: “I'd rather they had a little
bit of cannabis, when they are old enough, than have them drinking
alcohol because it's so much more dangerous and bad for your health”
she said.
It is an attitude that may shock some but in Oakland, California, where
the enforcement of laws against marijuana possession has been the
lowest police priority since 2005, it is a common one.
"Children can grow up in Oakland knowing that cannabis is a medication
or something similar to having a glass a wine," Mrs Nicholas added.
In 1996, Californians voted to pass Proposition 215, a law which paved
the way for medical marijuana dispensaries in the state.
On November 2, Californians will be returning to the polls decide
whether to approve Proposition 19, a law which would legalise the drug
for personal recreational use in the state.
My dad is the opposite. He'd rather have me drink than smoke pot, but he has no idea that marijuana isn't that harmful....he still thinks like the 1930s propaganda films
my parents were pissed when they found out I smoked weed about 10 years ago...Now I constantly plug the use of weed to my mother because she has fibromyalgia. Finally smoked a joint with my aunt a few weeks ago and claimed she didn't hurt at all that day! Need less to say I said, "told you so" and now I don't think she cares who smokes weed.
Times are changing folks. I'd rather my kid smoke weed than drink any day of the week (when he can think for himself).
Yup. I did not care about the pot. When the boys drank, they knew they better not fuck up - I would always offer to destroy them if they did. Their survival chances were much better with weed.....guess so, they are still alive!

Alcohol over cannabis?!?!, but cannabis is an illegal drug, that automatically makes it worse than alcohol. I trust my government because they say that cannabis is more dangerous than alcohol. <---- FAIL!
That is what ignorant people say.
Alcohol is more dangerous than cannabis. Alcohol gives you a painful hangover the next day as if you had been poisoned (imagine that), cannabis makes you feel relaxed and sleepy the next day (oh no! not that!).
If cannabis is legal to have and use, than anyone who has a problem with abuse or addiction can openly talk to anyone about their problem, including their parents!!!! Would you rather you kid have a problem with cannabis abuse and all the kid needed to do is get some help and support from the kids parents to help them fix their problem, or rather than have to keep it a secret and let it end up causing more problems and potentially end up in jail or prison?
The effects of smoking cannabis are usually lighter than those of many other recreational psychoactive substances. People are generally capable of carrying out normal actions and activities while high.

I just knew that with my hairy ass boys and how I was that if I started treating them like idiots (instead of just occ. calling them one) or went fag on them, they would never trust me again and put me in the asshole class. I wanted to be right near those hardy little pirates to KEEP them out of as much shit as I could. Maybe I was wrong, but I tried. I did not want some other freak asshole out there becoming me, because I fucked it up, acted a puss and alienated them. Boys will be boys. They can give you a pass to the sacred, secret fort or fuck you off completely - I wanted my decoder ring too. I actually liked those guys. (I wonder what they do....kinda miss them sometimes...)

Democrats have completely controlled Congress for several years. What have they done for legalization?
Oh yeah.... not a fucking thing.
Obama has had Congress in his pocket since the day he was elected President. What has he done for legalization?
Oh yeah.... not a fucking thing.
Good job at not knowing what the fuck you're talking about though. You're awesome!

^ I see lots of finger pointing on this website towards either republicans, fundamentalist Christians, the elderly, etc and direct all the blame of the legal status of cannabis towards them.
Although large proportions of these voting groups may be against legalization, the truth is there is not one single homogeneous group of people that vote "no" which can be blamed. This scapegoating is focusing on one tiny part of the problem and can never really lead to a solution. If all the fundie christians were to suddenly vanish today, cannabis would still be illegal the next.
The main issues are misinformation, an inability to be skeptical and critically think, or simple intolerance for the choices of others. This is what needs to be addressed to change the tide toward legalization.
Also, people frequently cite republicans as the party "against marijuana legalization". If that is the case, then democrats are certainly not the party "for marijuana legalization". Barbara Boxer (D-CA)is a co-chair of the "no on 19" committee! These two parties are not opposites, but rather have a lot of common ground. Don't expect anything radical from either of them because they are scared about alienating voters.
