Mother: I'd rather my kids used cannabis than alcohol
October 26, 2010 - telegraph.co.uk

Kristin Nicholas is a mother of two. She is active in her children's school life and contributes to her church community. She also smokes marijuana and tells Alastair Good that she would not discourage her children from smoking it when they are older.

While most mothers accept that their children will experiment with alcohol at some point, they would draw the line at illegal drugs.

Mother of two Kristin Nicholas disagrees: “I'd rather they had a little bit of cannabis, when they are old enough, than have them drinking alcohol because it's so much more dangerous and bad for your health” she said.

It is an attitude that may shock some but in Oakland, California, where the enforcement of laws against marijuana possession has been the lowest police priority since 2005, it is a common one.

"Children can grow up in Oakland knowing that cannabis is a medication or something similar to having a glass a wine," Mrs Nicholas added.

In 1996, Californians voted to pass Proposition 215, a law which paved the way for medical marijuana dispensaries in the state.

On November 2, Californians will be returning to the polls decide whether to approve Proposition 19, a law which would legalise the drug for personal recreational use in the state.

My dad is the opposite. He'd rather have me drink than smoke pot, but he has no idea that marijuana isn't that harmful....he still thinks like the 1930s propaganda films

my parents were pissed when they found out I smoked weed about 10 years ago...Now I constantly plug the use of weed to my mother because she has fibromyalgia.  Finally smoked a joint with my aunt a few weeks ago and claimed she didn't hurt at all that day!  Need less to say I said, "told you so" and now I don't think she cares who smokes weed.

Times are changing folks.
I'd rather my kid smoke weed than drink any day of the week (when he can think for himself).

Yup. I did not care about the pot. When the boys drank, they knew they better not fuck up - I would always offer to destroy them if they did.
Their survival chances were much better with weed.....guess so, they are still alive!

Alcohol over cannabis?!?!, but cannabis is an illegal drug, that automatically makes it worse than alcohol. I trust my government because they say that cannabis is more dangerous than alcohol. <---- FAIL!:facepalm:

That is what ignorant people say.

Alcohol is more dangerous than cannabis. Alcohol gives you a painful hangover the next day as if you had been poisoned (imagine that), cannabis makes you feel relaxed and sleepy the next day (oh no! not that!).

If cannabis is legal to have and use, than anyone who has a problem with abuse or addiction can openly talk to anyone about their problem, including their parents!!!! Would you rather you kid have a problem with cannabis abuse and all the kid needed to do is get some help and support from the kids parents to help them fix their problem, or rather than have to keep it a secret and let it end up causing more problems and potentially end up in jail or prison?

Vote YES on Prop 19.:super:

No Shit....

The effects of smoking cannabis are usually lighter than those of many other recreational psychoactive substances. People are generally capable of carrying out normal actions and activities while high.

POSITIVE

    * mood lift, euphoria
    * laughter
    * relaxation, stress reduction
    * creative, philosophical, abstract, or deep thinking : ideas flow more easily
    * increased appreciation or awareness of music; deeper connection to music; increased emotional impact of music
    * increased awareness of senses (eating, drinking, smell)
    * change in experience of muscle fatigue; pleasant body feel; increase in body/mind connection
    * pain relief (headaches, cramps)
    * reduced nausea, increased appetite (used medically for this)
    * boring tasks or entertainment can become more interesting or funny

NEUTRAL

    * general change in consciousness
    * increased appetite, snacky-ness
    * slowness (slow driving, talking)
    * change in vision, such as sharpened colors or lights
    * closed-eye visuals (somewhat uncommon)
    * tiredness, sleepiness, lethargy
    * stimulation, inability to sleep (less common)
    * blood-shot eyes (more common with certain varieties of cannabis and inexperienced users)
    * mouth dryness, sticky-mouth (varies with strain)
    * interruption of linear memory; difficulty following a train of thought
    * cheek, jaw, facial tension / numbness (less commonly reported)
    * racing thoughts (especially at high doses)
    * time sense altered (for example, cars seem like they are moving too fast); time dilation and compression are common at higher doses

NEGATIVE

    * nausea, especially in combination with alcohol, some pharmaceuticals, or other psychoactives
    * coughing, asthma, upper respiratory problems
    * difficulty with short-term memory during effects and during periods of frequent use (Ranganathan M, D'Souza DC, Psychopharmacology, 2006)
    * racing heart, agitation, feeling tense
    * mild to severe anxiety
    * panic attacks in sensitive users or with very high doses (oral use increases risk of getting too much)
    * headaches
    * dizziness, confusion
    * lightheadedness or fainting (in cases of lowered blood pressure)
    * paranoid & anxious thoughts more frequent
    * possible psychological dependence on cannabis
    * clumsiness, loss of coordination at high doses
    * can precipitate or exacerbate latent or existing mental disorders

HANGOVER / DAY(S) AFTER

    * dry mouth
    * tired, red, dry, or itchy eyes
    * joint stiffness
    * fatigue, drowsiness, foggy or slow thinking
    * reduced memory skills, slower speed of recall

WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS (after stopping heavy use)

    * mild to moderate, non-life-threatening withdrawal symptoms occur after daily use in some users.
    * Withdrawal symptoms normally last 2-4 days, up to six weeks with long term use. Severity of symptoms is related to frequency and duration of use and individual sensitivity.
    * anhedonia (reduced experience of pleasure)
    * headaches, general unease/discomfort
    * difficulty sleeping
    * desire to smoke cannabis
    * slight loss of appetite
    * finding non-stoned life a bit dull, increased boredom
    * fatigue, lethargy
    * slow thinking, talking
    * stoned-like abstract thinking, impatience with or annoyance at linear thinking

ALCOHOL
POSITIVE

    * relaxation
    * mood lift, happiness, giddiness
    * increased sociability
    * lowered inhibitions / reduced social anxiety
    * analgesia (kills pain)

NEUTRAL

    * slurred speech
    * flushed skin
    * drowsiness, sleepiness
    * nystagmus, difficulty focusing eyes
    * changed (often increased) response to sexual stimuli
    * tolerance with repeated use within a few days
    * changed aesthetic appreciation: normally beautiful things can seem ugly, things normally seen as ugly judged beautiful.
    * "beer goggles" — others appear more attractiveref
    * mild visual distortions at high doses

NEGATIVE

      (negative side effects increase with higher doses)
    * decreased coordination
    * nausea, vomiting (vomiting while unconscious can kill)
    * reduced impulse control
    * emotional volatility (anger, violence, sadness, etc)
    * reduced ability to attain/maintain erection in most males
    * increased difficulty in achieving orgasm in some females
    * frequent urination (more with beer or wine), diuretic effect
    * dizziness and confusion
    * blackouts and memory loss at high doses
    * coma and death at extreme doses
    * brain and liver damage (cirrhosis) with heavy use
    * lowered inhibitions and increased confusion can lead to unwanted and negative sexual encounters (date rape)
    * hangover, lasting 12-36 hours, from mild to severe after heavy use
    * fetal damage in pregnant women at high dose or frequency

If you ask me, Datura Effects list is kinder than that shit.

I'm 25 years old, own my own home, and have two kids of my own.

Yet, my parents accept my alcohol use but would frown on marijuana use, as they have in the past.  Now I just have to keep it a secret.

So sad, as I hate keeping things from my parents.

I just knew that with my hairy ass boys and how I was that if I started treating them like idiots (instead of just occ. calling them one) or went fag on them, they would never trust me again and put me in the asshole class.
I wanted to be right near those hardy little pirates to KEEP them out of as much shit as I could. :shrug:
Maybe I was wrong, but I tried. I did not want some other freak asshole out there becoming me, because I fucked it up, acted a puss and alienated them.
Boys will be boys. They can give you a pass to the sacred, secret fort or fuck you off completely - I wanted my decoder ring too. I actually liked those guys. (I wonder what they do....kinda miss them sometimes...)

What a moronic statement.

Democrats have completely controlled Congress for several years. What have they done for legalization?

Oh yeah.... not a fucking thing.

Obama has had Congress in his pocket since the day he was elected President. What has he done for legalization?

Oh yeah.... not a fucking thing.

Good job at not knowing what the fuck you're talking about though. You're awesome!

^ I see lots of finger pointing on this website towards either republicans, fundamentalist Christians, the elderly, etc and direct all the blame of the legal status of cannabis towards them.

Although large proportions of these voting groups may be against legalization, the truth is there is not one single homogeneous group of people that vote "no" which can be blamed. This scapegoating is focusing on one tiny part of the problem and can never really lead to a solution. If all the fundie christians were to suddenly vanish today, cannabis would still be illegal the next.

The main issues are misinformation, an inability to be skeptical and critically think, or simple intolerance for the choices of others. This is what needs to be addressed to change the tide toward legalization.

Also, people frequently cite republicans as the party "against marijuana legalization". If that is the case, then democrats are certainly not the party "for marijuana legalization". Barbara Boxer (D-CA)is a co-chair of the "no on 19" committee! These two parties are not opposites, but rather have a lot of common ground. Don't expect anything radical from either of them because they are scared about alienating voters.
