Sweet adventure idea

So I have been considering this for a long time now, but I think this summer I am actually going to try it out. My plans are to essentially take a backpack with a couple of spare changes of clothes, a bunch of weed and other essentials for smoking, and a pillow and blanket, and to live on the streets for a couple of weeks. Don't ask me why, but something about that appeals to me. I might also decide to hop a train, they run back and forth from Canada daily here, and they're usually the big cargo type, not passenger trains. I know tiny_rabid_birds has done something similar to this, I think he was hitchhiking across Europe or something, but has anyone else? Experiences? I hope it'll be worthwhile.

That's pretty awesome... I never even realized there was a whole subculture of train riders out there. Sounds right up my alley.

Dude, if you embark on this adventure, you're going to discover a whole shitload of subcultures.

Don't forget to pack a knife, train hoppers and squatters are extremely territorial.

Also be careful when actually hopping on the train. A kid in my town slipped and his foot went under the train and it was severed.

Also, if you're white, people will wanna rob you because they'll assume you have cash (or cashable items) on you.

Fuck yeah, they'll rob anybody who's not part of their crew. The streets and trains are claimed territory, be careful.

Yup, it's best to be on guard when in unfamiliar territory.

Yeah, I'm reading up on it now, I had no idea the FTRA even existed until thePatient's post. I'd take a friend or two, and maybe hop to Montreal then out west and back. I have read that FTRA operate predominantly on union pacific railroads, which is the opposite side of the country as me.

Ok dude on august fifth I got a backpack along with all the essentials and took a greyhound buss from phoenix az to palmsprings CA. I then walked to the coast and ended up in laguna beach. Next I took the city buss through LA, I took the buss to get out of there in one day, it's not the best place to camp out at. Then walked through malabu all the way to Ventura. I then meet another traveler who talked me into taking a train all the way up to Portland Oregon. We then walked and hitched to Government Camp, a town at the base of mt Hood. We bumbed it there for two weeks setting up camp in the woods near the town. We ended up beginning pretty popular in the small town and I had an amazing experience there. Then I hitched down south to nevada because the winter rain was coming. I made to the border of Oregon and Nevada and got a ride from a woman who was living out of her van and I told her the rout I wanted to hitch hike through Nevada and she ended up giving me a ride all the way to Ely. Where I then walked to the great basin national park and then to Zion national park in Utah. I now have a job in the park until the winter is over. My goal is to make all the way to cape cod all the way on the east coast, coast to coast!
