cubies?
    #1338690 - 02/26/03 08:18 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

on the way home, unhappy with todays finds we decided to take a look at some paddocks close to my friends house. after briefly looking around we found what appeared to be cubies (or something). each one was growing out of cow dung, and stained blue, although it was the afternoon, some were in not so good condition, but the stems were a purple/blue colour, and the caps bruised blue when pressed. let me know if i've finally found something worth taking home. thanks

Never hunted cubies myself but looks like you got a good score there. Thanks for the pics. Have fun with those.

First two pics:
Psilocybe cubensis

Third, fourth, fifth, sixth...
Possibly Panaeolus cyanescens... look pretty old/beat up...I'd toss them ...  :frown:

Last ones...
Psilocybe cubensis.

Notice how you're cubensis have the larger, meatier cap that is carmel in color, fading out to a white. They have white meaty stalks, with the purple veil around the stalk about 2/3's the way up. They bruise blue, and will have a chocolate-purple brown sporeprint. Smell them as well.. they have a very unusual smell that can help you ID in the future.

oops, I only looked at the first two, figured they were just different angles. My bad. But good find anyways. - @cro

thanks angry
yes, the smaller ones didn't survive the trip home
i'll return to the same place tomorrow morning, we barely covered a quarter of the paddock, so there is much exploring to do.

Yeah, I've heard that Panaeolus cyanescens are better tasting and... "better" than cubensis. I'd look for some fresh specimens of those, and bring them back. It appears that you will not have much problems finding them

Cool man.

I'm like 90% sure they are Panaeolus cyanescens... not positive though. I do see some bluing on them. No dout In my mind about it being a Panaeolus species...so you're safe there, there is a lot of spore deposit on the stem, which is black.

Try to find another few specimens...Make sure that tehy do have some sort of yellow, buff, or carmel color on the caps. The extremely white, larger Pans which resemble cyanescens are really antillarum, which are nothing of interest

Yeah, I would say that they are appear to be more cyanescens looking than of a papilionaceus....of course they are beat up, and its pretty hard to make that decision without seeing them first hand.

I just see bluing on those pictures, and the stems appear to be a lot lighter than Panaeolus papilionaceus stems, which tend to be dark.
