Small, young Mexican mother - aged 20 - has just become the Chief of Police in the drug cartel controlled city of Praxedis Guadalupe Guerrero.
Marisol Valles is a criminology student with no police enforcement backround and the youngest ever police chief soley because no one else wanted the job.
She says she is not afraid - and that she and her predominently female officers will not carry weapons and that her morals will carry her/them through.
I give this this women huge props for principles, but I fear she will be made an example of - and become a martyr within a year.
So terribly sad.

I remember 3 years ago when Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, returned to the faction-torn country with a promise to reunite.
She stated that she was not afraid of the many death threats and yet I was fairly certain she would get assassinated which she did. Of course, the Western world did not mourn for her as they did for Princess Diana, because...
Sometimes getting killed for one's vision contributes to actual change and may be worth it in some fashion - and other times one just gets caught in the meat grinder and things go on as before as if one never existed.

I personally don't think she'll be killed. I'm sure the cartel will corrupt her. The drug cartel is probably very pleased about this.

Well she already said in the article that was linked that she wouldn't be dealing with drug trafficking stuff and was going to leave it up to the feds, so I guess she has a chance.

If the Cartels do not feel that she is impeding their sales, there is no reason to harm her; but if she is, they have shown no compuction about killing women or children.

If she's not impeding them, she's not doing her job. Even if she washer her hands of the drugs, she can't well avoid the rest of the crimes, like murder.
You know what would be comical if it wasn't so tragic is that these drug cartels contribute to American anti-drug politicians' campaigns. I'll post a link to some evidence along these lines if I can find it again. It is in their interest to keep drug laws as draconian as possible in order to maximize their profit margins. Not unlike the mafia did during alcohol prohibition. History repeats itself and our leaders aren't watching.
Decriminalize drugs and give adults sovereignty over their own body and the drug cartels are put out of business overnight when you can buy your drugs at the corner gas station at a sane price.
It worked in Portugal where drugs are now legal and drug use is down across the board.
Have you ever seen a dog with a long stick in his mouth who keeps trying to get through a doorway too narrow for the stick? He keep bumping the stick into the doorway because he just doesn't have the intellect to turn it sideways? This is American drug policy.

I just assumed she is working for the cartels. In that case it would not be foolishness or courage, but good old fashioned greed.
