Aragon High School student took LSD before falling to death in Canada

Aragon High School student took LSD before falling to death in Canada
October 23, 2010 - mercurynews.com

A 17-year-old Aragon High School student was under the influence of LSD when he plunged to his death during a trip to Canada in June with teachers and fellow classmates, according to a British Columbia coroner's report.

Daniel Cho and two friends took the drug while they were on a bus headed from Seattle to Vancouver, British Columbia, according to the coroner. The boys were with more than 100 other Aragon students headed to Canada as part of a musical exchange program.

When the group made a stop at a popular tourist spot called the Capilano Suspension Bridge on the evening of June 6, Cho climbed over a 4-foot-high fence and fell 100 feet into a ravine below.

The coroner has ruled his death an accident, and Canadian police won't file any criminal charges in connection with the case.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family," said Scott Laurence, superintendent of the San Mateo Union High School District. "It was a very sad, tragic event."

The group, which included teachers, flew to Seattle from the Bay Area. Once the students were aboard a bus, one of Cho's friends gave him the LSD, the report says. Some of the chaperones noticed the boys were behaving strangely during the ride, especially when they had trouble properly filling out customs forms.

"One of the faculty members was planning to speak to one of the boys about it, but was intending to wait until they were at the hotel, rather than doing so in front of the other students," the report says.

Laurence said he was not aware of any chaperone noticing strange behavior from the student leading up to the fall.

The chaperones told investigators that they didn't know the boys had taken LSD until one of the boys admitted that he, Cho and a third boy had taken the drug.

By the time the bus reached the Capilano bridge, two of the students were no longer feeling its effects, the reports says. But Cho was still acting strangely, investigators learned.

He was bumping into and pushing people, tripping and falling. He also appeared to be angry and upset, the report says.

At one point, he even climbed over a railing into a restricted area, but then climbed back onto the walkway and was warned by a chaperone to stay on the path.

The two other boys who took the drug tried to calm down Cho. In response, he became aggressive and punched one of them in the chest. After that, one of the boys walked away, and the other turned to leave when he heard a noise. When he turned, Cho was gone.

No one saw him fall, but the coroner concluded there is no evidence Cho went over the railing intending to hurt himself.

Subsequent testing revealed LSD in the boys' blood. The report says the drug was a factor in the fall because it impaired his judgment.

At the time of the tragedy, Laurence said, the district was reviewing field-trip policies, which cover the number of chaperones needed, their duties and other issues.

But the district hasn't changed those policies as a result of what happened in Canada, he said.

"From everything I understand, there was an appropriate level of chaperones on that trip," Laurence said.

A spokesman for the North Vancouver Royal Canadian Mounted Police said police weren't able to determine where the drugs came from and won't be filing criminal charges.

"It's a tragedy," said Cpl. Peter DeVries. "It highlights the danger of taking drugs."

I'm surprised they aren't trying to charge the friend that gave it to him.  I guess the police are nicer in Canada?

Lol nicer is not the word I would be using. To me there all the same pricks.

But you can blame your governments you can blame Harper and Obama and all those teachers in the schools you can blame them and all the law officers who are suppose to be setting an example...Lol educate teach children about these substances teach them the right and wrongs.

Do you just wing out the fucking key's to your car and just let your son/daughter give at er'? Eh? No you don't you fucking sit down and teach em the right and wrong's you go slow stopping and starting how to yield to the right of way.

Why not bring this approach to thing's such as LSD? Marijuana? Cocaine?
Where are all the experts? Why can't you figure this out?Yet its so simple.
You pop all your prescription pills but you make sure your 17 year old son doesn't take any...And you provide good reason right?

You don't drink and drive? And there's a reason for that. And most of the time tis provided.
You say Don't Do drugs BUT you provide no reason you just say NO...Like a child.
When your 17 years old you don't take acid and go off on a school trip. "EDUCATE" if this individual knew more about what he was consuming what the effects are what could happen good trip/bad trip...What to do in the case of... Etc. etc. SET AND SETTING ...

There are responsible ways to approach this shit but no one takes the time to actually teach em. Blame society And Blame fucking parents for this death blame our law makers and politicians for there ignorance. ..And high taxes.

This is not to say once they know these thing's to go out there and eat all the acid they can but at least warn them about these thing's what can happen...You can't watch them all the time so the least you can fucking do is to leave them with something to take with them...Not just your FEAR to loath on. ...fucking hypocrites

Probably not just the LSD.  I'm sure he had some issues before, and maybe even latent schizophrenia.

All the other kids were sober already.  This is something that was triggered by the LSD, but not the LSD itself.  Something that likely would have come to the surface eventually, whether or not he ever did LSD.

Man thats awful...poor kid. I really feel for his family, I got prayers for them.

This type of stuff really hurts LSD's image at a crucial time. I think there are some missing details to the story that may explain things better but unfortunately this will always been seen as the sole fault of the drug by the public.

edit: The bridge looks cool but i am deathly afraid of heights and i would be freaked out trying to walk across something like that while tripping.

If you are tripping, LSD totally effects your judgment as well as coordination.  You go over to see something that looks cool thinking you have your balance and then wam, you fall, or if you don't realize there is a drop off til the last moment.  Mistakes happen, it sounds like he fell.  I've almost fallen going hiking on acid, though luckily I am good on my feet.  It sounds like a newbie mistake, no ones fault.  Drugs have dangers, just because LSD is awesome doesn't mean its safe to take it and drive around town, it impairs you.

Very true, but similar doses of LSD have similar durations.  Both his friends were sober when this happened.  If not for that, I would say he was probably just fell due to a balance issue or something.  He wasn't on an ordinary trip.  He was acting angry, upset, and violent.

According to the words of a few teenagers that just told on themselves, I wouldn't be surprised either way.  They could still test for LSD in there systems so it couldn't have been too long after eating it.

A very sad story but dont blame lsd. It was the kid's decision on taking it. The drug is truely amazing but should be takin at the right time and place.... this was definetly not the right setting.

Well, they do blood tests that are accurate to the pg/dl range.  And considering the half life mechanism of metabolism, I'm sure the LSD can be tested for several hours after the comedown.

But you're right, the kids could easily have been lying about being sober.  Maybe the kid took 30 hits or something.  Who knows, really.

I was a senior at Aragon when this happened.

Daniel was the kind of kid no one expected to be doing acid, but no one was really suprised.
The kid who sold him the acid got expelled and that's all that happened to him.
Our school got a lot of deaths each year, in one case a kid was on PCP before killing himself.

This happened a bit ago, it was right after schoo, ended.

Wikipedia says 3 hours for blood tests, but it doesn't have a sitation and upon further reading I'm starting to doubt its very accurate.

Hmm, well assuming he has 4 liters of blood (4.7 for a 160 pound adult), a 100µg dose would give you 2.5µg per deciliter.

With a half life of 3-5 hours, he would still have .00488µg per deciliter after 30-50 hours

That's 4.8ng/dl, or 4800pg/dl which would make it completely detectable in the blood long after the trip.  The only variable is how sensitive the specific test is.  Drug tests range drastically in sensitivity.

Most THC tests only detect levels above 1-2ng/ml, which is 100-200ng/dl.  If they test LSD with the same scrutiny, it will never be detected.

So it all depends, I guess.
