Other information: They smelled fantastic, kind of like flowers.

Nice work... one of my favourites. Although now they call them junonius instead of spectabilis - which I kind of hate, always liked the name spectabilis.

I would imagine if we hunted together we'd find our styles are similar." - Mr. Mushrooms RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together. St Thomas

The smell was really different from the usual G. junonius/spectabilis I find. I wish I'd taken photos of how it was growing because that was also not really the same. Does anyone have information on how the species complex thing works out in NJ?

That's because your mushroom is G. luteus. One of my favorite Gyms.

Do they always smell so good? I know people often say that Gyms smell bad but this was a really, really pleasant smell.

Yes, as a rule, G. luteus have a pleasant smell according to Hesler's monograph. I call it anise-like. Don't let that fool you though. They taste pretty nasty. More potent than BLG's though, especially when green like yours.

I think my tongue is broken with regard to Gyms. G. liquiritiae taste like death but neither junonius or these have much taste at all. I've never tasted more than a tiny piece though so maybe that is why?
