One of my friends just showed this to me:
http://www.greenmuze.com/build/design/908-portable-tent-jacket-.html
I wonder how this works. It's an awesome idea.

That looks awesome! Are they available to the public?

I have no idea, this article is the only thing that I have seen on them (after my friend told me about them).
If anybody finds them for sale, be sure to let me and the rest of the Shroomery know.

Agreed.
The inner liner of the jacket becomes part of the outer lining of the tent. Spend a night sleeping in the rain, and the next morning you get up and have no coat to wear because it's soaking wet. RR

I agree that it is kind of gimmicky. I wouldn't use it for a main tent. I still think that it is a really cool idea and I would love to use it for a day. It would be a riot.

Yeah interesting idea but I'd like to see how it functions as an actual tent. Probably not very good.

In reality, a prepared person would be WAY better off with a quality jacket, and minimalist tarp set up.

The only useful application I can think of for this jacket would be for hikers or something. If a hiker broke their leg or got badly injured a tent would be better than nothing. A casual hiker doesn't usually carry much, in this case they would be at least somewhat prepared just by putting on their jacket.

Maybe as a last means for survival, but for all practical purposes, it has it's flaws that keep it from replacing a tarp/tent. Mad props to the kid for designing it though!

The jacket alone would fill a small day hiking backpack, so it seems not very practical. I did however see something cool on the REI website. It was a single-person tent built on a cot frame. This keeps your tent above the mud and water common when hiking/camping in the spring and fall. I damn near ordered one. RR
