My 55gal pasteurizer technique
    #13357973 - 10/19/10 03:35 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Youtube vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox6qIUFchxw

I have a weather treated board bolted onto the foot of the dolly because the foot itself is not large enough to support the rim of the barrel.

A 120v 1500w heating element and anode from a 4 gal Ariston point of use water heater is bolted with stainless bolts onto the opening of one of the barrel drains.  Notice that the top of the barrel is now the bottom.  The element is attached to a thermostat from the same water heater.

The bottom of the barrel is cut half moon shape but not all way around for stability.  Drain holes are drilled on the other half.

Straw, etc is packed in as hottest possible water from water heater is pumped in from hose (dont use sprayer like in vid).  I then place a piece of wire mesh and 2 wide concrete blocks inside to hold straw submerged.  Take out bricks before dumping (have rope tied to them for easy extraction) but leave wire mesh in to hold straw back.

Dumping water uses a barrel cut in half as a guide for the water to flow.  The half is just pushed down tight on top of barrel.  A steel pipe is used to hold on to while one hand holds on to barrel half to safely guide it down.  Barrel filled with water will be very heavy and if you are not large like me you will need two people to dump.

Always have cold water running in floor drain as hot water dumps out so that you dont crack a pipe/drainage tile from heat.

After dumping stand barrel up and fold wires between barrel and dolly, keeping thermo on the side.  Place concrete block underneath and you will have the perfect angle to unload.  Fork out straw with clean fork onto cleaned tables spread thin to cool.

Thats all!

Nice demonstration!

I don't suppose there is any way that a regular 110v electric heating element could be used on a smaller scale, like a 30 gallon drum? I've been wanting to better my bulk  pasteurization setup, but right now don't have much space...

WOW great video been waiting for this to pop up. Looks like all said and done I could build one of these for around $40. Sweat deal man your help is greatly appreciated. About how long does it take to get heated up? :bow2:

Nice.  I've got slow internet so couldn't watch all the video, but saw the first minute or so(after half an hour downloading)

You can easily drain with a short section of garden hose.  Slip it to the bottom of the barrel, and then suck on the other end to get the water flowing.  That's how I empty my 55 gallon drum full of pasteurizing water.  It's too heavy otherwise.

Is the element protected in any way, or does it just stick into the tank?

Normal size water heater elements require a contact thermostat that butts up against the side of the tank to measure temp, but obviously that doesnt work if using a nylon barrel.  If you could find a steel 30gal barrel then it might work but then you risk electrocution cause its conductive.

The thermo for the portable water heater elements is separate and relies on an anode with the element to switch on and off.

The element, anode, and thermo will all cost about $80 buying it online or local plumbing store.

It takes 1 1/2 to 2hrs to heat up to 160 with house water heater on highest setting (yours may differ).  I also use a water heater insulation jacket around the barrel (not shown) and a plastic trash bag to cover the top so fully insulated.  Not insulated it will take up to an additional hour to heat.

I pack straw in pretty tight so I would have to use maybe a piece of pvc with hose attached at top to make siphoning work, but good idea if you are unable to dump into basement drain safely.

Dumping is nice though because by the time the barrel is completely drained I have cleaned unloading tables, prepped poly tubes, etc. and then immediately ready to unload hot straw.

Wow, I thought I had to use steel. Good to know. Its a lot easier to find plastic barrels here

Hmmm
Any homebrewers out there?
That same setup could be used to mash beer.

I didn't watch the whole video but that's not terribly useful for brewing.  If you want to do whole grain brewing you generally use 3 stages.  First you heat the water in the first stage.  Then once at the proper temperature you drain that water into your grain to mash.  Then once you have your wort you drain into your final boil stage where you filter out the grain and eventually add your hops.  The easiest way to move from stage to stage is using gravity so you build a stand that can hold the containers at three different heights and drain down to the bottom.  The alternative is using pumps.

When brewing I've always used kegs with the tops cut off.  They fit perfectly on big propane burners.  If I was to need to pasteurize a bunch of straw I would probably use the kegs as well.  In another thread Buckeye mentions using plastic barrels that held herbicide after washing them.  I don't think I would ever do that.  We had a plastic barrel we wanted to use for fermenting beer that had root beer in it at some point.  We washed it and soaked it and left it in the sun and could never get the root beer smell out.  If we couldn't get even the root beer smell out I wouldn't trust plastic herbicide barrels.

I guess it depends on what volume you need but it seems like a converted keg with a big burner would make an affordable and fairly efficient solution for bulk pasteurizing.

I've never had a problem with any herbicide residue after washing.  Herbicide stinks strong and I was able to wash it out at carwash using detergent, removing all smell.  Never had a detremental effect on mushroom growth.

If you are really concerned they may the same barrels for solvents, but are harder to find.
