Anyone here play? I was thinking of starting to play because I absolutely love the sounds. Mitch Mitchell, John Bonham, guy from Santana's band, that's the style I'd wanna play in. If I was to start playing, would you recommend I just get a snare to practice on and see if I'm any good, or should I just get some beginner's $400 set?

I play a Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz with Bosphorus light-weight cymbals, blending hip hop and jazz.
Mitch Mitchell, John Bonham and the various Santana guys have quite different styles if you ask me. Mitchell is my favourite out of the three.
If I were you I'd get a second hand Pearl Export or equivalent. And definitely get a teacher. If you're going to learn you should do it properly from the outset, before you learn bad habits (like I've done!!).

i'd go with a cheap 5pc Pulse drum set. The heads and cymbals arent the best, but those can be upgraded as you progress and develop your style.

Yeah I know Buddy Rich, that's like comparing Clapton to Robert Johnson though.

There are definitely similarities between a guy like Michael Shrieve and Mitch. Bonham, not as much. But I think you should go for it man, the music world needs more drummers like that

Yeah same here, I'm pretty poor when actually writing beats - I make up all sorts of sick sounding rhythms in my mind but actually translating them to drums is rough for me... plus it looks like a hell lot of fun to play and sounds awesome and playing them would probably solidify your rhythm on other instruments even more.

Meh - he's not very musical. Mitch Mitchell plays the most musical drums man, it's unreal. Not too bad that he backs up the best guitar player ever to live too!

My personal favorite though Mitch Mitchell is the man.

I love Gretsch Catalinas! I have the Catalina club rocker w/ 26" bass and Zildjian K Custom dark cymbals. I love jazz/hip-hop combination, it's something I've been experimenting with a lot.

This is from a show in Dallas. I love my Starclassic kit. Bubinga shells, Copper Burst finish. Chad Smith snare, Zildjian A&K Customs. DW 5000 double pedal.

But it was a lil more than 400...
