Hello people from the mushroom patch, the hobbit next door was thinking of making a dryout box for his mushroom. He thought of building a wooden box with a 15W light bulb built inside with a small computer fan on top of the box to circulate the air inside. He was wondering if it was a good idea or simply a waste of time and he also wanted to know how you guys do it. The hobbit appreciates your answers.

hey hobbit, you want to make a dry chamber using desiccant similar to the one in the link: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23384 Now, if your hobbit is growing alot, then the above method is less practical. u should use a fan and maybe heat source for drying your mushrooms. Heat is detrimental to the alkaloid content of the mushrooms, but far worse is when the mushrooms are not dried QUICKLY. Many people use regular food dehydrators because its less of a hassle and dries more quickly than the method in the above link, just remember to keep the setting below 115 F.

oh yea, desiccant: where you can get it is grocery stores and paint shops...you said that you cant find it at paint shops?? impossible.....tell them you have a closet that needs to be dried out before painting and you heard that you should use desiccant....see what they say. See what alternatives they offer you.

Only uv light is bad.
The easiest (and most effective IMO) way to dry shrooms is to put them on a piece of cardboard with a fan pointed at them for about 24-48 hours depending on how big they are.

I've seen them tied like peppers b4 and hung in a room that got pretty warm over a floor heating vent. It works pretty well.
U might also try spliting the stem from under the cap down it really speeds up drying by almost 1/2

If the Hobbit dry them on the cardboard with a fan, will the shrooms loose some potency or it's negligeable?

You can pick up a used American Harvest food dehydrator at your local thrift shop for less than $8.00. Most are like brand new that have never been used! These work great!

Roadkill I saw those at k-mart last night they were on sale for 20 bucks and some change. I about bought 1 but it didn't have the fruit roll up sheets with it.
I wonder if the american harvest ones come with the fruit roll up things? I had a ronco but there not as tough as they look on tv. The cat jumped on the cord and pulled it off the table and it busted like hell. The funny part is the guy beat it with a hammer on tv and it didn't break. Maybe he should do a drop test on them.
