California voters turning against Prop. 19, poll shows October 21, 2010 - Los Angeles Times
California voters have turned against controversial initiative to legalize marijuana a poll from the Public Policy Institute of California found.
Voters now oppose Proposition 19, the marijuana legalization measure, 49% to 44%.
The poll indicated that opposition has surged since September, when 52% of likely voters backed Proposition 19, which would allow Californians to grow and possess pot.
The earlier poll's Proposition 19 result had encouraged supporters and attracted some high-dollar donations. The measure would allow Californians who are 21 and older to grow and possess marijuana, while cities and counties could authorize commercial cultivation, sales and taxation.
The latest poll found support had eroded significantly across all demographic groups, but most steeply among Latino voters. In September, 63% backed it. Now, 51% oppose it.
Mark Baldassare, the organization's pollster, said the drop may have come because of a barely visible campaign. He noted that the proponents have to persuade voters that people like them support the initiative. "The burden of proof is always on the yes side," he said.
He also said that opponents seemed more passionate about the issue. Among likely voters who said the legalization issue was very important to them, 33% planned to vote for it and 63% against it.
Baldassare also said the poll found no indication that young people were more enthused about marijuana legalization than older voters. Democrats have started to talk about using the issue as a way to motivate young voters in 2012.
Much of the reversal appears to be driven by evaporating support in Southern California. In September, 56% of likely voters in Los Angeles County and 52% in other Southern California counties supported the measure. This month, those percentages slipped to 41% and 42%.
"As expected, California voters are taking a closer look at Prop. 19 and are just saying 'No,' " said Roger Salazar, a spokesman for the opposition. "While the measure claims to regulate, control and tax marijuana, voters don't need eyedrops to clearly see it does none of those things."
Tom Angell, a spokesman for Yes on 19, said the poll indicates that the race is close. "We'll be doing everything we can to get our message out, including working with a team of hundreds of committed volunteers who are spending their free time calling undecided voters," he said. "I don't think the other side can match that."

It seems like every poll is different.
The SurveyUSA poll has it ahead 48% to 44% and Fox News has it in a dead heat.
It is too close to tell one way or another.
Just make sure to vote if you are in Cali!

I think the prop 19 campaign made too much of a deal about reducing cartel profits as a result, obviously prop 19 alone won't really do much at all. Only once the entire USA legalizes marijuana will it have an effect.
At least if prop 19 fails, there's lots of good data from this run that will help a 2012 initiative pass.

There are always fewer voters in the mid-term. A lot of the stupid college kids and young people probably won't even show up to vote and haven't even registered. That is just typical. I figure if you don't participate then you have no right to bitch about the way things are going. They should of brought up the fact that the hemp industry would bring Cali a shit ton of money in addition to the marijuana.

I don't believe the results of this poll. The main reason being is that the poll was conducted, for the most part, prior to statements from Attorney General Eric Holder, Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske, and Sheriff Lee Baca. People in general do not like being threatened by the federal government and rogue county cops. I think their threats will have the opposite effect and get more people out to vote for Prop 19 and the next poll will reflect that.
And, of course, legalizing pot will reduce drug cartels profits. How could it not? If you read the RAND report it indicates that, although the spin has been the opposite. Cannabis is just one drug and California is just one state so the cartels are certainly not going out of business as a result but their profits will take a big hit.

I'm inclined to believe what you are saying. Its opponist propaganda , what better way to swing the vote your way than to make false statements of winning & try to get people to jump on your bandwagon.
I think it will dent the cartels profits in other states as well , as I am sure that California will be producing more of the marijuana for the rest of the country , instead of Mexico.
Marijuana is big , bulky & smells really loud. There isn't enough money in it , especially if the bottom drops out of the price.Which is predicted to do when the supply far exceeds the demand.
I don't sell weed , but SWIM usually paid about 600$ PER LB of decent Mexican weed. With the influx of high grade Mj from California going for the same price or say even 1k , how are cartels supposed to turn a profit when their product is inferior , and considering what they have to go through to get it across the border. If they choose to stay in the biz of mj , they would have to cut their price by about 50% to stay competitive. It just doesn't sound as lucrative as it once was.

I dont know what to think of the polls, but the Feeling is that if we were to vote now it would not pass, there is simply not enough support.
I check out all of the volunteer websites, and the only one that does much is San Diego. Orange county, the bay area, san francisco should be well ahead, but it seems they are coordinated by different people and some important areas are rather inactive. Its a shame. If you can make a trip to cali and start putting up signs or whatever, i recommend you do, we need the help.

Thats the last thing that we want is Illegals making laws for us- Why do they have so much pull-Hell what about the Natives and Blacks Whites that lived here b4 them and they dont get the rights of the illegals

Hey if you guys really want to help out and get Prop 19 passed, you can do so even if you don't live in California. I got an email from Marijuana Policy Project about a project that's going on right now to mobilize California voters. How it works is you sign up on their site, they give you a California voter's name and number, you call them and find out if they agree/disagree with Prop 19 and then report it back to justsaynow and they take steps to get the 'yes' voters out on November 2nd. It's also an oppurtunity to give the undecided voters a pitch for marijuana legalization. The site is:

i have three(3) pet theories on this that im currently entertaining ..a) simply the rightward lurch of the electorate in general.. and b) the recent 143 tonne tijuana marijuana bust sent a clear message that prohibition works...more likely the cartel staged the bust precisely for that reason..since they had the most to lose.. and c) voters who would have otherwise voted "yes" have come to the conclusion that prop19 is simply not workable in the face of a radical repugnican congress that could make life very difficult for CA if they dont pony up...

id guess C...
people dont read much about drug news if it doesnt affect them, it seems. Even the 'big' busts. I think most people however are ok with the current situation... so long as no one takes away jersey shore or the carpool lane.
