It must be 'let's try and panic the parents day' at wwltv ...
Inhalant re-emerges as popular drug among teens October 20, 2010 - wwltv.com
Inhalants that were abused to get high during the 70's and 80's are resurfacing, sold as "liquid incense," with some varieties called "rush."
It has some local parents concerned that their kids may be sniffing it.
“This looks like an energy drink or a shot,” said Kenner parent Cherie Schmidt.
She aid her son recently asked her about something called "rush" that's sold in some tobacco and head shops.
“If it's just something I can walk in and buy, like walking in and buy tobacco, what does it do,” Schmidt asked.
It's the latest product being sold as "incense" only it's being used to get high.
"Rush" is an inhalant, sold in liquid or powder form and depending on the chemical used, it could be illegal.
“Took a sniff, got very lightheaded and dizzy, and was shocked,” Schmidt said.
It has similar chemicals in it to whip-its or poppers, popular inhalants in the 1970's and '80's.
"Rush" products contain different varieties of nitrites and in some cities and states, including Louisiana, some of them are illegal.
“The term rush came from what they do to the patient or to the person who is abusing them. Some people get addicted to the rush,” said Dr. Jim Diaz, Public Health Professor for the LSU School of Heath Sciences in New Orleans.
Dr. Diaz said, in the '80's, poppers and whip-its were used as sexual enhancers.
“It's also a drug that can cause a number of side effects from sight loss, blindness to heart attack,” he said.
James Becnel is project director for the Jefferson Alliance of Concerned Citizens, an anti-drug coalition.
“It's a very short-lived high. It's inhaled. It lasts anywhere from fifteen seconds to forty seconds,” Becnel said.
Becnel said one of the coalition's biggest concerns about the renewed rise in popularity of rush is that other forms of it, that appear to be legal, are readily available in some head shops.
“[Gas stations and convenience stores are] really becoming these quasi-head shops. The biggest concern of our coalition has always been the easy access that our underage kids have when it's being sold at a convenience store or gas station,” Becnel said.
Just like synthetic marijuana or mojo, chemists over the years have created new forms of nitrites that pass legal muster, and it's being sold as incense or potpourri.
"I figure, if my son is asking me about it, how many other kids out there are asking about it," Schmit said.

Yet again "it's all about the kids" is the only argument they can pull out of their asses. These people are really starting to sound like a broken record.

Ya this is old news. I can't believe they'd even try to make an issue out of this. Rush isn't a problem.
