DirectX/OpenGL API
    #1335775 - 02/25/03 07:02 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Does anybody out there know of any good books and tutorials on how to program 3D graphics using the DirectX or OpenGL APIs? I've found several books on Amazon.com, but none of them seem to be any good. I'm looking for a real beginner's book. I have absolutely no experience with graphics programming, so I need to start with the very basics. The Java3D API seems fairly easy to use, but I can't help but feel that Java is just doing too much of the work for me. I want more conrol, dammit!!

u should try searching MSDN as dx api's are solely M$'s property. good luck just jumping into graphics programming. Just cause you can use API's doesn't mean u can properly integrate them into a program, but good luck on your long hard journey.

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

I assume you mean direct3d?

I can't really help you out but from what I understand direct3d is now the way to go (opengl used to be better, but of course microsoft has quickly ripped it all off and surpassed the technology). Good luck

Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.

Trust me, I'm not so naive as to think I'll become a graphics programmer overnight just by learning the API. It's hell of a lot more complicated than that. What I'm really looking for is a book/tutorial that will start me off with the very basics of graphics programming and slowly build me up to using DirectX API efficiently. By the way, I do have experience in Java, some C++, and some Intel assembly code, so I'm not completely clueless, I just need a good starting point in graphics programming.

C++/DirectX is the way to go...there are a few game development books that have beginner information, which can ofcourse be applied to application software.
