I found these little guys by a river i live near. I didn't really plan on eating them right now, but i wanted to find out from you smart people if these where anything i could try in the future. Here's the info. State: Southern California Location: Along a river bed just in the grass. They appeared after a steady rain for 2 days. Characteristics of gills: Gills are light brown. some are a tad darker. Measurements: Caps are 1/2 inch to 1 1/2. Stems are 1-2 inches. Characteristics of Stem: Light brown/orange. Smooth. Hollow. Thin. Characteristics of Cap: A darker brown/orange at the top, then gradually lightens as it gets to the sides. Smooth textured. Spherical and convex. Spore Print: On the aluminum foil the spore prints where a dark orange or possible light red. Bruises: Dark brown. i can't distinguish a scent being that they all smell like the grass that was around it. Here are the pictures, my camera doesn't work to well. Note that there is dirt on the mushrooms, those aren't growths or anything.
any help would be appreciated. I haven't tried them, and most likely won't. Just a curious person looking for some answers. thanks. winnebago

I see this is your first post out here. Welcome to the Shroomery.
You made a nice effort to describe your find, so I will try to guess what they are.
My first thought is that they look like a species of Cortinarius. Unfortunately, "corts" are terribly difficult to identify to species (most professionals I know won't try without a microscope and a lot of time). I'm not sure that all three are the same species, either. If they are Cortinarius, then most people would describe the spore print as being a rusty brown in color. Would that be a reasonable description of the spore print color of these specimens?
There are no psychedelics or good edibles among the Cortinarius. But there are a couple of species which are deadly poison (causing kidney failure). So definitely do not eat them. As a whole, the species of this genus are not well studied for edibility or toxicity (partially because they are so difficult to identify accurately).
A couple species they somewhat resemble are Cortinarius tubarius and Cortinarius gentilis. Note that Cortinarius gentilis is a confirmed deadly poisonous mushroom.
You should not consider this to be an authoritative ID for these. The photos are difficult to see some details in, so I am not really confident of this ID.
-------------------- Happy mushrooming!
