Mexican army makes record 105 134 ton marijuana haul October 18, 2010 - Reuters
Mexican soldiers seized 105 tons of marijuana with a U.S. street value of more than $340 million on Monday in Mexico's biggest-ever pot haul, the army said.
Heavily armed soldiers raided a series of homes in a poor suburb of Tijuana, across the border from San Diego, California, and came under fire at least once as they took the drugs, also arresting 11 suspected traffickers.
Troops found the narcotics wrapped in 10,000 brown and silver packages in houses and a parked truck. The marijuana was brought together from across Mexico over several months and bound for the United States.
"The seizure of these drugs is without precedent in the country," General Alfonso Duarte told reporters at a military base in Tijuana, adding that the drug was worth 4.2 billion pesos ($344 million).
The marijuana was painstakingly wrapped and labeled with signs and logos for a series of specific distributors in the United States, the army said.
The bust is good news for President Felipe Calderon, who has staked his reputation on beating back powerful drug cartels in a military-led campaign he launched in December 2006.
Calderon is under pressure to show his drug war is working as the death toll over the past four years climbs to nearly 30,000 people, putting Washington and foreign investors on edge and provoking alarm among many Mexicans.
Mexican cartels grown extremely powerful over the past decade, while violence sparked by cartel rivalries has spread beyond long-troubled cities such as Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez to formerly peaceful places including the wealthy industrial city of Monterrey and the Caribbean resort of Cancun.
Mexico is one of the world's top marijuana producers, exporting about 7,000 tons of the drug a year. Marijuana and home-grown heroin together generate more than $10 billion in exports for the cartels every year, according to private estimates.

Yeah, his drug war is working alright. Working fantastically well for the cartels, that is.

why would only two cops in one police truck go with nothing but 9mm Beretta and expose themselves to the bullets when you know this guys carry 7.62x39 machine guns.
damn and they say marijuana doesnt make the cartels much money... just another reason to legalize it here. keep the money here

7000 Tons isn't even the tip of the iceberg... Don't forget all the weed that is grown/sold domestically not only in Mexico, but in the US, Canada, Netherlands, UK, Spain, and many other countries across the globe.
This bust was unusual. But every
day tons of Mexican pot is confiscated coming into the USA, which means
at least 20 times that amount is getting through by land, air,
sea, tunnels, etc.
Sure, not all pot smokers use Mexican weed, but all of this pot is
being used by Americans daily and generating billions of dollars for
Mexican drug cartels. For anyone to suggest that legalizing cannabis
will not reduce drug cartels income by a significant amount
is flat out lying and would expect us to believe that daily news
reports of Mexican pot busts are false or that drug cartels are giving
it away no charge.

Exactly on point! Face the facts folks: These cartels wouldn't risk importing tons of pot at a time if people weren't consuming it somewhere in the US.
Let's look at this example: If you owned a donut shop, would you continue producing donuts that no one ever bought? Of course you wouldn't. You would stop production on those and focus on products your customers actually did buy. The same logic can be applied to the cartels, only their product is of slightly more value than donuts and slightly less legal to boot.
Legalize marijuana so we can flood the American market with high quality domestic weed and "weed" out the cartels' profits!
