Former surgeon general calls for pot legalization

Former surgeon general calls for pot legalization
October 18, 2010 - CNN

Former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders told CNN Sunday she supports legalizing marijuana.

The trend-setting state of California is voting next month on a ballot initiative to legalize pot, also known as Proposition 19. The measure would legalize recreational use in the state, though federal officials have said they would continue to enforce drug laws in California if the initiative is approved.

"What I think is horrible about all of this, is that we criminalize young people. And we use so many of our excellent resources ... for things that aren't really causing any problems," said Elders. "It's not a toxic substance."

Supporters of California's Prop. 19 say it would raise revenue and cut the cost of enforcement, while opponents point to drug's harmful side-effects.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a letter, obtained by CNN Friday, that federal agents would continue to enforce federal marijuana laws and warned Prop. 19, if passed, would be a major stumbling block to federal partnerships between state and local authorities around drug enforcement.

His letter was a response to an August letter from several former directors of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration urging the White House to block Prop. 19 if it's approved next month.

Elders stressed the drug is not physically addictive and pointed to the damaging impact of alcohol, which is legal.

"We have the highest number of people in the world being criminalized, many for non-violent crimes related to marijuana," said Elders. "We can use our resources so much better."

Hopefully she'll get behind that lawsuit against the DEA.

This is exactly the kind of backing we needed!

Politics. They don't want to attract too much attention to themselves and the people who appointed them over controversial issues.

Usually true, but not so in this case. Dr. Elders, while Surgeon General, was controversial for several reasons including suggesting that drug legalization as a possible alternative drug policy should be studied. She didn't have a problem speaking her mind even if Pres. Clinton disagreed with her.

Bet this will get half as published as the cop's statement as how they will still prosecute even if it passes,

why would we listen to draconian politics and 50's propoganda when we can listen to the SURGEON GENERAL.

She has been supporting legalization for a long time.

Unfortunately, she is one of the lesser respected surgeon generals.

Also, her opinion may be "tainted" by the fact that her son got arrested for cocaine possession while she was in office, setting off a scandal.

Either way, I think she is smart and knows that marijuana is not as dangerous to one's health as the law. I also have a lot of respect for her for speaking the truth, even if it causes "embarrassment" and "controversy", which is something most politicians are scared to do.

Quote:

In January 1993 Bill Clinton appointed her the United States Surgeon General, making her the first African American and the second woman following Antonia Novello, to hold the position. She was a controversial choice, a strong backer of the Clinton health care plan  and she was not confirmed until September 7, 1993. As surgeon general, Elders quickly established a reputation for controversy. Like many of the surgeons general before her, she was an outspoken advocate of a variety of health-related causes. She argued for an exploration of the possibility of drug legalization and backed the distribution of contraceptives in schools. President Clinton stood by Elders, saying that she was misunderstood.[1]

In 1994, she was invited to speak at a United Nations conference on AIDS. She was asked whether it would be appropriate to promote masturbation as a means of preventing young people from engaging in riskier forms of sexual activity, and she replied, "I think that it is part of human sexuality, and perhaps it should be taught." This remark caused great controversy and resulted in Elders losing the support of the White House. White House chief of staff Leon Panetta remarked, "There have been too many areas where the President does not agree with her views. This is just one too many."[1] Elders was fired by President Clinton as a result of the controversy in December 1994.[1][2][3]

Quote:

Already reviled by conservatives for advocating abortion rights and condom distribution in schools, Elders drew fire — and censure from the Clinton administration — when she suggested that legalizing drugs might help reduce crime and that the idea should be studied. On December 15, 1993, around one week after making these comments, charges were filed against her son Kevin, for selling cocaine in an incident involving undercover officers, four months prior. Elders believes the incident was a frame-up and the timing of the charges was designed to embarrass her and the president.[5] Kevin Elders was convicted, and he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.[6] He appealed his conviction to the Arkansas Supreme Court, and that court reaffirmed the conviction. The court held that Mr. Elders failed to show that he was entrapped into making the narcotics sale.[7] There was no further appeal.

Actually,Dr.Elders was an already extremely outspoken proponent of full legalization and had the sense to realize, and frequently voiced her beleifs to the press, that our great nation could most certainly do better than to harrass and destroy lives over something so benign that posed no threat to society and she even stated that she beleived alcohol to be a health threat and that no research had ever conclusively shown any dangers associated with pot use at all.So just to let you know, man, the lady has ALWAYS been outspoken about the state of pot in America. And she's on our side.Thanx.
