Sorry for the low volume, recorded this with an un-amplified electric.

Sounds pretty good, but I gotta turn my speakers up all the way and still struggle to hear it. Try putting the mic closer or turning it up or something

Here's 3 or 4 that I've come up with, only been playing a year so I'm still learning. Can't decide if I wanna pursue theory and technique or just stick to playing with what sounds cool, and it's pissing me off

i suggest the latter and leave theory for people who want to be pussies.
make your own theories on music. afterall, that is what music is for... your own interpretation of the piece.

Yeah man that's what it's starting to become. I like the theory and all that but I was reviewing some shit today about "playing in thirds" today and I just couldn't do it and it made me wanna quit, then I came across that other dudes thread and just had some fun.

Theory can be a great thing to know, and by no means will it stop you from being creative/and or just playing what sounds good..

Yeah I know a bunch, I think it's the technical excercises that really kill me.

ya, ya... i know... no shiot.
but it's useless after you learn it so what is the point to practice it for ten years? fuck it... i am getting pretty ok at some shit... i have to access a spot in my head as of yet. sounds silly but whatever... i haven't learned anything except for what i taught myself on it.
edit: exactly.
edit edit: yeah...

I love theory personally - I find it fascinating to learn the inner workings of all that I have heard my whole life. If I feel like I'm in a creative rut theory always kicks me in gear Developing all your aspects as a musician equally is key. I used to simply play other peoples songs and play by ear when I was learning and I got to be a technically proficient player pretty damn fast, but throw me some random chords or tune on a random song and I'd be stuck trying to find things that sound good for the next 5 minutes.. Theory definitely conquered that situation.

Recorded with a FPS mic... so my tone and playing have been kinda raped
But for the sake of the thread! I could play this repeatedly for hours... very relaxing

but it was done long while ago... and to do anything with it right now would be to much for me to do. it's a song from a blotted out time... to me it's as perfect as abstract whiteness.

anti-MIDItes I tell you.

Theory doesn't tell you how to play, it gives you a way to communicate what your playing.

You're an idiot. Learning theory doesn't make you a pussy.
Learning theory will make you progess as a musician infinitly faster and makes it 100% easier to compose songs and harmonize with multiple instruments.
Most people who just "trip out and play their way maaaaaan" are just happening upon certain keys and scales without realizing it. Things that could be explained with theory if you weren't a lazy ass.
If you take the time to learn to scales, and THEN be creative with it... you'll progress a hell of a lot quicker.
I think your excuse is just one of laziness. But play however you want... I don't give a fuck. I can tell you this though- the best music is written by highly creative people who take the time to actually understand their instruments.

I don't really care how people approach their learning, but it's annoying to hear people say you don't need theory or that it's a waste of time. Fiddling around on your own is basically teaching yourself theory except at a much slower pace and with a very lacking understanding of what's occurring.

Hmm, it's a midi, maybe you will have to check what your midi synthesizers sound level is at. I could try converting it tho.

naw, you're the idiot. i never said don't learn theory... i just said that you should learn your own way, preferably... even if you've learned theory, you still have to learn your own methods of playing your shiste little instrument.

i was talking to someone, not speaking in general. pull your head out of your ass, shit for brains.
read the rest of my posts in the thread... i clearly have stated also that theory is good to know.
keep learning your way... and keep telling people it's the best way.
i still say it's for poontabs like yourself to get ahead of the curb so you can stand a chance of selling some crock rock to more underprivileged guitar wank-jobs.
yeah... seriously. stop taking your little lessons so seriously... it limits potential... it's taught that once you learn guitar theory, you should forget about it.
it's only a guide... so yeah, on my last note here... stop tellign people how they need to play.
i know didn't... i merely responded to one person... who said he was pissed about not being able to decide whether to learn theory or just play the way he was playing.
it's was only my opinion.
guitarists, sometimes... oh my fucking...

Heres a song that I made with with some experimental guitar and electronic parts. I took a heroic dose of cubes when I wrote it and I was scared shitless. You can hear it in the song.

Nice, 3rd Eye. Sounds pretty cool.
And to contrast, here's me dicking around in garage band a while back
I was playing the electric with the delay, the other things were loops.

Learning music theory, with no set goal in mind as to WHAT your learning, WHY or WHERE you intend to use it of course is a big waste, will bore you, and you'll not learn anything from the deal.
There is much out there that properly applied, will aid you in SO many ways. Knowing the rules, BEFORE you attempt to then BREAK the rules, will pay off, big time.
Having a solid, well cared for Guitar, intonation set up by a Luther, will give you a Guitar that plays in tune at all positions, and SOUNDS good. Learn to SING what you play. Many people will tell you they don't care to get into others tunes, but a tune is a phrase that carries a melody, and being able to express a tune over a chord change that someone can hum is a BIG deal, even if it is a SIMPLE one.
My Hero, amongst many others, is David Gilmour, and while he isn't a big tapping guy, his solos have a melody, and he imparts a soulful musicality to them that is hard to deny. His Guitars are in proper tuning and intonation, and his gear is well maintained, to include GOOD cables. Another issue that many players cut corners on.
99% of the stuff ANY guitar player shreds off? if you can HUM it? and the TONE is tasty? your well on your way to being the shit.
Employ music theory that applies well to what you are going after.
I will try to upload some samples of what I do at home with my rig to this thread this week. Keep on jamming out!

a somewhat sloppy take of a song I've never been able to put words to.
it's in one of my favorite altered tunings, DGDGAD. because i never put words to it never structured into a cohesive whole.
i got a bunch of songs from this thread downloading and i listening to a few the other day. akuma, i really like the improvisation you did but i wasn't a fan of neiti neti's counter melody. otherwise sick shit though
twighead, your stuff is downloading.
jimtown, everything you've posted has been awesome, i really love it
devilish, the guitar in that is sick as FUCK dude! good shit
3rd eye, the beginning the end is awesome at like 2:3ish, when you regain your rein on chaos & start playing that increasingly sick riff. you got a good sound man

well, so you know... i did that just one piece of music... every note up on my keyboard... to produce the track.
i did relatively fast, and like... probably around two and half, to three years ago. so it's an easy track... it isn't hard to make. just one thing posted on top of itself in different ways.

Thanks man. It was a little something I wanted to try and come up with. Not a lot of people listen to my atuff so It's good to hear some comments on it.
Your song is very soothing, a nice folk vibe to it. I have been on a big acoustic kick lately and I enjoyed listening to it as with most songs in this thread. It's nice to see some fellow creative shroomerites at work.
My headset mic is not that great for recording but here's a riff I just recorded called Soleil.

Here another little jam I recorded a few years back. Pretty simple progression. I played all instruments and tracked over, just never really got around to doing anything with the song.

Third Eye and Chodeson...you have two completely different styles, but your stuff sounds great!

I have music professionally recorded, but I like to keep it anonymous on here; so heres a poor recording of an old riff that never got used in any of my arrangements.

sure!
the song you asked me about definitely sounds like the same tuning, especially when i look at the fingerings.
thanks for the positive response, i've always wanted to do something with that song but have yet to really structure it - i just have the separate parts i play in order.
here's a link to my soundcloud. the first song is a song i recorded back in high school, yet it's my personal favorite. the second started while i was experimenting with some software instruments over a simple looped progression (the electric piano). i kept adding to it and even ended up doing some sampling for the drums. it's the last complete recording i've made. sadly, it's nearly two years old and was done for shits and giggles - the modal song was the first thing i've recorded in ageeeees.
http://soundcloud.com/rhapsode also, i changed the chorus lyrics in the scent of jasmine to something a little less juvenile (i replaced the lines about smoking to 'just a simple token/to summer nights spent/under those bright white lights/that surround us.')
btw twighead, your stuff has obviously downloaded by now i really dig it, great stuff man.
this thread is awesome.

hahah, you ripped off a little of some accoustic death metal peice in the first section... i wish i could remember who did it... but yeah... consider that.

Hmmm, wasn't intentional. The beginning/backing figure is just a power chord with the notes picked individually, so it's not terribly suprising. It never made it into an arrangement, never will. Like I said, just an old B side riff... my humble contribution to the thread.

post more! i want to hear what you compose!1 not some "humble" b-side riff that sounds like an acoustic piece from death or dissection or soemthing.
(i swear if i could place the band... i would show you... it's almost directly influenced by it; your piece i mean.)

Thought I'd revive this thread. Here are 3 things I've written in one file. Just recorded them, they're not perfect but good enough. The intro on the first is jenky, just ignore it
Lemme know what you think.

Sorry, this one is quieter 'cause it's finger picking. Also makes it a lot of fun to play
