Newborn child taken away because of a
bagel
October 15, 2010 - ABC7
New Castle, PA -- This is a story that will likely outrage many moms.
Liz Mort gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, but the next day, police
and child protective services in Pennsylvania came to her home and took
the infant from her - all because of a bagel.
Liz Mort says she never saw it coming.
"I was shocked. I was at a loss for words. I just started crying," she
said.
Child protective services in Pennsylvania were at her doorstep, taking
her 1-day-old baby because they thought Liz was abusing drugs.
"Someone was saying that 'Oh, we're CYS and we found something in your
system,' and at that time I never even heard of it before. It means
that we have to take custody of your child," Mort said.
Jameson Hospital in New Castle, Pennsylvania, tests mothers of newborns
for drugs. State law allows it, but what the hospital did not consider
more closely was poppy seeds.
"Opium comes from the poppy plant. Ingesting poppy seeds can cause
levels of morphine and codeine in a person's urine," Dr. Neil Capretto
explained.
On the day Liz gave birth, she says she ate an Everything bagel from
Dunkin' Donuts - a bagel with lots of poppy seeds. Now, the local ACLU
is taking on the case.
The hospital issued a statement saying: "We have initiated an
investigation to compare our standards to other community and regional
hospitals. And if necessary, we will advise our reference lab to
critique their standards for consistency."
But Liz isn't sure yet it that will be enough.
"I understand that they were doing what they had to do to protect
children, but they should have investigated it more. Like I have to
drive by that place every day when I go to work, and I just cry every
time," said Liz.
So far, no lawsuit has been filed. The ACLU says it is trying to figure
out the next step. Liz did get her baby back, but it took 5 days for
the hospital and child protective services to determine she was a fit
mother.

I bet the lady was doing some H, or some OC. poppy seed bagel. I doubt it would show up on a UA.
Read the end of the article. She got her kid back but it took 5 days for them to pull their head out of their ass. Poppy seed bagels do cause you to test dirty on UAs if you eat enough.

Jesus do none of you realize what a fucking outrageous police-state-tactic breach of civil rights that is?

The others - the living - are those who pushed their control as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled back, or slowed down, or did whatever they had to when it came time to choose between Now and Later"
In Seinfeld, there is an episode in which Helene almost loses her jobs because in her urine they find traces of opium derivatives, and it was all because she ate a poppy seed bagel. If I hadn't seen that I'd be wide-eyed too !

I do. If someone came to my door to take away my child for any reason, they would get murdered. Do you really think I would endanger my children? Drug use =/= child neglect. Why don't they base child neglect on the status of the child and his/her disposition rather than what the parents do while the kids are away.
Also I think it would take a lot more than one poppy seed bagel to set off a drug test. She probably used. But that means nothing. They had no right to be examining her blood anyway.
There shouldn't be any standards whatsoever for having kids.

I disagree, if the child wants out or is suffering malnutrition or some such malady caused by neglect that the child isn't old enough to understand yet, there need to be statutes to protect those victims. However, while drugs can definitely play a role in child neglect cases, the simple presence of drugs should not mean anything.
I think the bottom line is that at some point, child welfare is an arbitrary thing. It's not always as clear cut as shouting: "this is a result of the police state!".

Mythbusters did a study on this recently and it takes, if I remember right, five poppy seed bagels to test a false positive.
My first instinct says that her story is BS, as much as I want to believe her. Although each person has different biochemestry and what not, so I could be wrong.

One poppy seed bagel has enough morphine to be detectable, I do not think it is out of the question for one to put your over the threshold for testing positive if the person did not eat a lot of other food / drink much water.
