Helvella (possibly) lacunosa or palustris?
    #13336757 - 10/14/10 05:17 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

When I first read about Helvella, I thought they sounded creepy-cool and thought, eh probably never see one.  HAH!
Piny woodland floor growing in the pine duff and moss.
The cap is irregularly shaped (saddle) and grey with a mostly smooth grey underside.
*Insert question...If it doesn't have gills and it doesn't have pores or teeth, what exactly is it's method of releasing spores?  I have yet to come across any writing that describes that process.
The stem is white and deeply ribbed.  The stem matches Mushroom Expert's palustris although that writing talks about Michigan and not PNW. In general, the description for lacunosa fits overall much better than palustris, but I'm stuck on the details of the stem and the fact that the margin is not attached that I can tell at any point on the stem.

Anyway, any suggestions would be awesome!  Cheers!

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.
