that's ridiculous! 3k!

did you ever get sick from the motion of the ocean? i've never lived in one. i wonder if it just feels like being in a hammock? zzzz

i can't stand it, i have my bags packed, if we don't get the job permits were waiting on down there i'm gonna go insane imagining how cool it would have been.

it's interesting you mention that: space considerations aside, the thing motion is part of the reason people have long used hammocks on boats/ships.

the ship may be rocking, but gravity will keep the hammock drawn down, depending on it's orientation.

I don't think I would ever be able to live on a boat. Props to all of you who could do that, but there is no way I could. I would rather live in the forest near a lake and have a canoe/kayak that I could go on. That's all the boating I need.

It would probably be a real trip living on a small sailboat while sailing across the ocean. On one hand you can be indoors, and be cramped. On the other, you could be outside with nothing as far as the eye can see! what a contrast!

I've always dreamed about building one of these, which would be cool for a journey of a couple of days: http://www.stevproj.com/IntroVacPg1.html or http://www.stevproj.com/IntroWkndrPg1.html

I think it would be like camping, but on a boat instead of a tent, and being able to cover greater distances.

free sailing classes should be available for all able bodied people that live near the coast or large lakes, such communities would be highly rewarded if there was ever a sudden gas shortage or if an apocalyptic event ever were to hit that certain region and the population ever need to be evacuated.

Oh man, that is really cool. I think I'm going to make that my winter project. I would imagine sailing it would be great for beginners.

you could easily teach yourself. there are plenty of free sailing resources out there to get you started. there really isn't much to it. once you're on the water you just feel it. it's beautiful.

i think i'll shape the hull using ultra thin plywood. i'll then add a few layers of fiber and resin. i'll make plywood cutouts for the dagger and rudder and glass em.

i'll mix some marine grade expanding foam and fill the hull.

:pipesmoke:

this might cost me a few hundred$ but i can always sell it and make some money back.

^ You'll have to make a thread for all of us to see!

Check out the "mini sharpie" and the "daydream" on this page to see what to expect when building: http://www.simplicityboats.com/

Did you design the above yourself? Make sure it can float well and level

yeah, i sat down and sketched that out last night.

i should have a wooden frame up in about a week. i found several sheets of 1/8 inch oak plywood in the garage. i have an aluminum boom from an my old sailboat that will work for a mast.

i just need a sail, some fiberglass and resin to finish er up!

this might not take me very long.. i ran my own boat detailing business when i was in highschool. i had it for about 5 years before deciding to move on to teaching spanish and esl.

i might build me a small model to work off of. i'll post pics as i can.

I don't know all that much about boat design, but it seems like with a severe triangle shape like that the boat would have some pretty heavy weather helm when heeled over.

thanks for your input.

No damage to the boat.  My ego was bruised though

It's an old boat, heavy as hell.  Built the same year I was born.  But, it has most of the rigging of a larger craft, so it's a great way to learn the ropes.  Main, jib, spinnaker (haven't used yet),  outhaul, boom vang, etc..  In some good wind with a couple people who know what they're doing, it will plane and go pretty quick though.
