Identification (Iowa)
    #13328311 - 10/12/10 10:10 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I went hiking today and ran across a few different specimens. I was wondering if anyone could identify? I'm sorry about the pics.

First:

Second:

Third:

I found some of these too. Yummy.

Bad pic, bad lighting.

Second might be Morganella pyriformis.

For #2 I'd say Lycoperdon perlatum rather than Morganella pyriformis.
The reason being that they're on the ground rather than growing directly from wood like Morganella pyriformis.

Just my 2 cents.

The rest of the pictures are too terrible to make out what they are... Sorry. :undecided:

It looks to me like your camera has the capacity to take better photos.
Your major problems are focus and lighting. Try finding a macro mode on your camera and at all costs avoid using the flash. It also helps to go through your camera settings and if you can find any of them about "Face Detection" or "Auto-focus", turn them off.
Next, try to steady your camera as much as possible when taking a photo.
Clear out the grass or debris and then plant it on the ground or on a stick or something solid while you take the photo.
If your camera has any sort of "Burst mode" where it takes multiple pictures in sequence, it usually helps get at least one good photo out of a bunch if you're kinda shaky.

edit;
if you tell me what type of camera you have, i can probably tell you how to get better photos

It was a friend's phone. I'm not sure what model. I need to just get a better camera. Mine is awefull, but I should have a little extra $ soon to splurge on a nice one.

What are the second ones growing on?  It looked like wood to me but it could be ground.

Oh, not much you can do with a phone other than what you produced, lol.

Don't use the flash though :-P

Joie,
I figured the 2nd photo was within close vicinity, but that's a good question.
My finds of Lycoperdon perlatum have typically been on full sized dead deciduous trees. I don't really recall finding them on small branches but I'd be foolish to think it wasn't possible!

They were growing on a fallen deciduous tree. The pictures were taken less than 2m apart. The first pic on #2 is a mossy log.

Damn, thought that was grass... So it is Morganella pyriformis. My apologies Joie!

I appreciate the help. The log(tree) I found was nearly completely covered with those puffballs, and it was a huge tree. I had no Idea they could be edible. I'll go out there again sometime with a better camera and a large grocery sack  . I'd feel better about posting clearer pics before trying to cook them up. I don't want to die.

Edit. I should have been more specific with the habitat information and details, but this was my first time posting here. I'm a noob, lmao.

The third looks like Ganoderma applanatum, but I'm not sure.
