NMS Labs Identifies New Synthetic Marijuana in “Legal Everywhere” Incense Products K3 and K4
October 13, 2010 - sunherald.com

WILLOW GROVE, Pa. -- NMS Labs announced today that its monitoring of the widely popular synthetic marijuana products K2, Spice and related blends, has identified a change in the active ingredients. These newer blends underline the importance of testing beyond the more commonly detectable JWH-018 and JWH-073. The latest herbal blends on sale contain a related but chemically different product called JWH-250 which NMS Labs can detect in a blood test or in suspected drug material.

Barry Logan, PhD, NMS Labs National Director of Forensic Services notes, “There have been signs from activity on the Internet, that as states such as Missouri, Pennsylvania and others moved to ban these new recreational drugs that manufacturers have switched to related but chemically distinct products which have the same intoxicating effects, but are not covered by the statutes.” NMS Labs has been testing incense products purchased over the internet since the Spring in order to develop much needed tests to assist health care providers, drug rehabilitation centers, law enforcement officials, reference labs, and others with the detection of synthetic marijuana use.

Pennsylvania State Representative Bryan R. Lentz (D-161st) is an outspoken supporter of a PA bill that would outlaw K2 and other so-called "synthetic marijuana" in Pennsylvania. He applauds Dr. Logan and NMS Labs for their work in educating the public and developing blood and urine tests to detect the designer drug in users because, “K2 is odorless so parents cannot detect if it is being used in their homes and, if it is ordered on line, the packaging it arrives in is so nondescript that it would go unnoticed by someone simply collecting the mail. That is why a reliable test is so important in keeping our kids safe.”

These synthetic marijuana compounds have been linked to adverse events, emergency room visits, and impaired driving arrests, especially in young people nationwide. Although the drugs contained in these herbal blends are not currently regulated by the federal government, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has labeled them as chemicals of concern.

“This latest finding was not unexpected, as simple modifications to the chemical structure create a demand for the latest and greatest ‘high.’ While technically not illegal, little is known about the adverse effects of these chemicals, and users are taking some risks by experimenting with them,” said Dr. Logan.

It isn't the risks that is making them want to ban it, they just don't want to allow anyone to get a marijuana-like buzz. If people found a way to get a marijuana-like high from corn, they would start banning corn products in those states and crash our economy.:cuckoo:

"keeping our kids safe"
Reefer Madness.:shake:

What about adults? If your not worried about keeping adults safe, then why ban it from adults? LIES LIES! As Mr. Hat from South Park would say to the law makers "You go to hell, you go to hell and you die!".:mad2:

NMS Labs.  Who exactly asked them to do these tests or develop these protocols?  This is a profit center for them.  They are making their livelihood by shitting on the privacy rights of drug users.

Strange days, any of us who are taking this stuff are essentially volunteering to be human lab rats, chemicals that have never been tested in any serious manner on anyone (not that I'm aware of), hopefully this stuff isn't too dangerous.

Strange days.  I couldn't have put it better.  I love being a part of this, though.  Sasha guinea-pigged more novel compounds than most people can name, and he's 85 and going strong.  It's always a risk, but with extreme care the risk can be reduced to a level I'm comfortable with.

This is worthy of some philosophical thought... :strokebeard:

I have to ask this question: Is it morally wrong to be high?

Aside from money and power, the way people answer this question is the whole reason for the war on drugs. The whole conflict between the generations about drugs hinges on this difference in values.

I do not consider drug use to be inherently wrong. What a person does in his/her spare time is of no consequence to me. You could beat off all day for all I care. What is immoral is when one ignores one's responsibilities to support one's pastime. Drinking your paycheck every Friday when you have a family to feed is immoral. Alienating your friends and taking off work to shoot up heroin is immoral.

The substance is not the problem: the user's lack of responsibility is.

^well said, I like the philosophical point of view.

Brian Cox - "[One] problem with today’s world is that everyone believes they have the right to express their opinion AND have others listen to it. The correct statement of individual rights is that everyone has the right to an opinion, but crucially, that opinion can be roundly ignored and even made fun of, particularly if it is demonstrably nonsense."

The logic behind prohibition really breaks down when people start talking about banning more and more things.  We can't possibly ban all things that any conceivable person could use in a harmful or irresponsible way.  We don't ban consumables just because they have health consequences associated with their use or because people overuse them (liquor, cigarettes, junk food, etc.)  So, like Odd_Nonposter pointed out, there must be a moral dilemma over intoxication.  Or rather, a subset of intoxicated states, because alcohol is tolerated.

I would agree...
However, I'm the type of person that's never really been big on taking drugs produced synthetically.  I'm hesitant to think about what long term effects (if any) might arise from these chemicals since they are "untested".
I try and be responsible by not putting these chemicals in my body...(i have enough in me already!)

But hey, that's just my opinion...you have your own free will.
