What the hell is causing this browning of the mycelium, also, does this look healthy? I mean..is it dead or what? I have 3 other casings that look exactly like this..

what browning? the only brown thing i see is this substrate you have.

mycelium seems fine to me in this pic, its just not THAT white and fluffy
mainly because of the kind of substrate (perhaps it doesnt loooove it).
what is it?

is there anyway it could be substrate dust? how are you keeping the rH levels up, if you are fanning, perhaps it is blowing small particles of substrate onto the mycelium thus turning it brown.

I say this only because the mycelium is that brown color only near the exposed substrate formula.

just an observation.

well if the myc is turning to brown and its not spreading further to colonize the rest of the substrate, then pour some H2O2 then pray then toss it

BUT

i have a casing now that it is rye grains with straw+honey. the result is a healthy casing which looks like 'Oh my god thats disgusting'. so perhaps you should wait and see if it will colonize the poo. if not and the brownish comes bigger then... :frown:

A friend had the same brown shit coloring my cakes in jar. It was bacteria, the myc struggles it, and when it's beaten, it turns brown. I attribute that bacteria to his cat, coz the smell of the bacteries jars smelled like where his cat goes to shit. Since them his jars are far away from the kiddy cat, and from all kiddy activity.
hope it is not your case coz i didn't succed with stopping contam with bleach nor peroxyde.
