Think they're sterilized??
    #1332526 - 02/24/03 07:35 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I just mixed 1 and 1/3 cup verm. with 1/2 cup BRF and distilled water and loaded it into a pint jar, then covered it up with about a half inch of dry verm. There are four holes punched in the lid, which I put on the jar, then covered with two layers of tin foil...I PCed that bitch for exactly an hour, then afterwards, lifted the steam valve to release all the pressure which took about 30 seconds. I then pulled the jar out of the PC, and the tin foil had created sort-of a bubble on top of the jar. It seems to me that it was still sealed to the sides of the jar, but then again, me being the dumbass that I am, decided that it would be brilliant to push the bubble down. Again, I am not denying that I am incredibly stupid - and I ended up doing it for a second time later on (1.5 hours later after I checked up on it). It has been sitting in my PC with the lid to the PC off, but still sitting on top of it. My question is...when I pushed that air bubble in the tin foil down, was the air going back into the jar, or was it leaking out the sides of the tin foil that I thought were "still sealed to the side of the jar"? I know it's not that big a deal, especially since it's only one jar...but I am just curious as to whether or not it would even be worth while to innoculate tomorrow.
I have one more quick question...I plan on making a few more jars tomorrow. Let me just make sure that I have this straight...I do the usual substrate/loading thing...I have lids that have four holes punched in it, I have some filter discs, tin foil, and I have a PC obviously...Here's my q: After I load the substrate into the jars, what do I do next? The substrate is just sitting there inside the jars, and waiting to be covered...do I put the filter disc on, then put the lid on, then put the tin foil on? Or do I put the lid on, then the filter disc, then the tin foil? Afterwards, do I just punch a hole threw the filter discs with the needle to the syringe, then tape up the holes with masking tape? Ahh...fuck, sorry this has been so long - thank you for your help!!
~~Peace

after I fill the jars with the substrate (whatever), i put
a layer of verm on top and a piece of alu foil. then straight
to the pc for sterilization. quite simple, perhaps i didnt
understand your question

should look like this (i think)

the only thinng with holes should be the metal lid, the filter disk offers a physical barrier that is self sealing (after innoculation).

hope i helped

There is no need for a filter disc with PF jars (that?s why the vermiculite layer is there) and please get rid of this misleading "dead air" diagramm.

actually the dead air can be used to flip the cake if the bottom isn't colonizing, this can be a way of allowing the cakes to colonize faster, thus allowing for a faster fruiting stage.

Trust me, there will be anough dead air after the cake has begin colonizing, even after the cake has been pressure cooked.

>actually the dead air can be used to flip the cake if the bottom isn't colonizing, this
>can be a way of allowing the cakes to colonize faster, thus allowing for a faster
>fruiting stage.

I love it when people who haven?t grown a cake yet start to "improve" things.....

well then, i guess anno has a problem with new people, just trying to help him out man, no need to act all high and mighty on me. I am sure that there are others out there with greater knowledge of the subject than me (you seem to be included in this group (a little arrogant about it but whatever)).

I'm repeating what others have told me, it's called sharing information, without it how would you have gotten to where you are today?

I never shared half gathered information.

You should know exactly what you are doing before giving advice on anything.

Then give them a chance to share it.
You still have a long way to go, a good way to start would be to read the faq:

www.shroomery.org/faq

If you find any things that are not clear enough, or contradicting, plase PM me, as I?m in charge of maintaining it.
