Humidity? I just dont understand?
    #1332392 - 02/24/03 06:42 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

this is my new and old terrarium.. i went & bought another one because i was having a prob with the humidity being too low because I noticed that the lid wasnt closing correctly so my humidity was leaving by there..

i went to wall mart and bought the one in the lower left hand that now my new one. My upper one is now back to being just a incubator..

my prob is that my humidity wont pass 85%. I have 2" of perlite with about 1/3-1" of 80% water 20 % h202. It wont go past 85 no matter what. i tried to add just a tad of water but nothing. I sprayed the walls and lid and i am fanning about 2-3 times a day for about 1 min.

is there anything else i can do to try and raise this?

top is my terrarium and the bottom is my incubator..

The problem may actually be your hygrometer, as they are notorious for being unable to go past certain rH% levels. You may be fine...

can anyone reccomend GOOD hydrometers that can go all the way to 100% rH levels?

It would be a bonus if it were digital and had 0.1% increments and maybe even a temp guage too.

(rH = relative humidity) right?

Sounds like you might have dry heat inside your home.

That was a guy I knows problem. Try a bubbler. The guy I know did and it still wasn't enough. He broke down and bought a Vicks Cool Mist. It did the trick.I think if he had added 2 bubblers though one on each side it would have came close to fixing the problem.

From what i've seen the really good ones are high $.
a guy I know just uses two.
1 digital
1 plain jane pet shop 6.00 pile of crap.

Between the two you should get a idea of the actual R/H

also i have an extra airpump around here from the fishtank. can this be used to my benifit and if it can does the hose need to be in the actual perlite or just in the tiub?

imho, you can't have too much water in your perlite. the perlite can be literally floating in the water. if you put enough water in then you can pump air into it, and that can be a very effective humidifier and air exchange too.

after careful measurements i have come to see that my perlite is only really 1" in the tube.. Should i bump it put to say like 2" of perlite and 1" of water?

If i have a bubler which i have just installed for the heck of it do i still need to fan? also what i did was just connect the old pump and put the tube line under the perlite.. whats the function here this is just for my personal knowledge.

thanks

Chances are your hygrometer is out of calibration. Most hygrometer designs diverge as the RH approaches 100%. There are some highly accurate hygrometers available, but they cost in the neighborhood of $300 and up. I found a digital hygrometer for < $50 which turned out to be within about 5% accurate in the high end of the scale. PM me and I'll tell you where.

Try calibrating with salt IAW the calibration tek and see what happens.

You might try getting some foam insulating stripping. It works great for stopping humidity loss.

personally, i'd use 1 inch of perlite in 2 inches of water.

a bubbler alone may or may not be enough air exchange. if you want to go this route, you may want a way for the air to escape from the -bottom- of the fruiting chamber. if you are bubbling into only damp perlite, you aren't really bubbling. if the perlite is floating in the water your bubbler will bubble better and you will have more efficient humidification.

was this a typo or should i have my perlite actually like swiming/floating in the water. I can say that my little bubbler has raised the rh so far like by 2 deg. I am going to have to try the salt calibration tek since i have 2 hydro meters in there. one digital and the ohter analog.

a= 90% rh
Dig= 86% rh

also it is safe to say that more wet perlite = more humidity?

i hope the dig is the ones thats off by 5

i prefer literally floating perlite.

i think of it this way:
can you have too much water? no. can you have too little water? yes. what is more effective at humidifying: partially saturated perlite or fully saturated perlite? fully saturated perlite.

if the perlite is floating, you've got -saturated- perlite readily giving up its moisture to the air. if you bubble the perlite water, humidification increases even further plus you get air exchange (assuming the pump is outside the chamber pumping air in)

i believe the use of unsaturated perlite stems from some people putting cakes directly on the perlite. of course if the perlite is floating in water the cake will fall into the water = bad. but if the cake/whatever isn't actually on the perlite this is no longer a problem and we can fully saturate the perlite without concern.

edit: if you are putting cakes on the perlite, DO NOT fully saturate it. i'm talking casings or chamber humidification, not perlite/water to put cakes on directly.

a vaporizer may be a humidifier. i have seen cool mist/wam mist "vaporizers".

a vaporizer is also a device generally used to smoke marijuana. if you use google.com to search for vaporizer, this is the one that comes up most often.
