bleaching black leather to turn it shitty brown?

will it work?
what if it's like a shitty plastic leather? any idea if it'll work?
i don't really want it to look great. in fact, well worn and weathered is better. i'm just wondering if i soak the stuff if a weak bleach solution will it turn a reddish brown? do i have to let it sit in the sun?
basically the situation is this. i got some women's black pleather (i think) boots from the thrift store. I intend to cut off the bottom of the shoe and then use the rest as a sort of boot top to wear over my pant-legs/tops of my shoes. it's for my halloween costume.

Brown shoe polish might work better. As far as making it looked aged just rough it up with some steel wool and maybe nick it up a little with a knife or something.

hrmm.. do you think that shoe polish would be effective enough to change it from black to brown? that seems unlikely.
i guess what i'll probably end up doing is the bleach treatment first to lighten things up a bit. then i'll put the brown polish on. i bet that'll work. at least well enough to suit my purpose.
i've never bought shoe polish before. it's not expensive, is it?

If recall correctly it's quite cheap (under $5). Bleaching and then polishing should would quite well.

i've already done it once before for halloween of '08, but i'm broke and i rather like the costume, so i'm doing it again with a few tweaks. i'm gonna be captain malcolm reynolds from firefly as he appears in the following

edit: another pic

i made a siiiiick ass holster and belt out of scraps from a leather purse when i did the costume initially. i'm really proud of the way it turned out. i was also able to do a pretty good job on the stripe running down the side of his pants using some brown ribbon and double sided adhesive tap. it's good shit, brah.

Brown shoe polish is brown If you use green shoe polish it gonna come out green
Theres tw kinds of shoe polish, the kind that is kinda transparent and the one thats got a color, its the latter you want.
Bleach, if it will do anything at all, will look terrible and harm the leather.

it's definitely not real leather. it's fake pleather stuff. i don't care if it gets harmed.
i'll get some brown shoe polish and do a test run on a small patch. if i'm dissatisfied, then i'll take the more drastic measures of bleach.

Oh if its synthetic the color is likely dye in the polymer and bleach won't do anything. With leather often too because shoes that have been polished retain grease and are hydrophobic.
Colored shoe polish is your best bet.
