We die when our biological bodies do, we don't go anywhere, we're just gone. What makes us who we are is not our body or 'spirit', but merely our experiences. Our consciousness is a product of our environment. It's very bleak to think when we die it's the end, but it's naive to think otherwise.

I don't like assertions like this. The mysticism bullshit is way dead. I'm not saying you're wrong indefinitely. But intangible shit like this is useless and, almost conveniently, undebatable.  I sincerely believe it has no place in the intellectual realm.

what is mystical about it? does your life end when you witness the death of another?

Hopefully your body will be taken to a morgue upon your death.

In and of itself, the first statement of yours that I quoted can only be argued as "mystical."  But in the context of the whole discussion, including your previous posts, it is in fact mystical (i.e. being anything undetectable to the senses and/or incomprehensible by human mind).

i think consciousness is a perpetuating cycle and will continue on with or without you

and...

a conduit for consciousness is ended, not consciousness itself

"Conduits for consciousness[?]"  Please. It's things like this that drive me crazy, because you're not helping anyone to understand consciousness anymore than we currently do.  You're just saying something to the effect of: "Well, consciousness is not a function of the brain, it comes from somewhere else, and you're brain is a conduit for the outside function.  Where is this somewhere else that consciousness comes from? Well, we don't know. But scientists still can't fully understand consciousness based on brain studies, so what I just said is totally credible."  It's like looking at the universe and saying "God did it."  It contributes nothing to society's body of knowledge.

Perhaps a better definition for mysticism would be:

"empty assertions, thoughts, etc. that insinuate a lack of understanding and, further, an inability to understand; condescension of the schizophrenic."

And finally, no, your second question is just stupid.

increasingly im starting to realize that hippies just use a bunch of big words/phrases that they don't really understand when they're flustered:

'conduits of consciousness' for example

Does anyone think that humans will ever be able to answer this question? If so, what span of time will be necessary to fully understand what happens after death?

other brains presumably. unless you want to get all mystic solipsist on me

all i'm saying is that the death of a single body is not the death of consciousness, as there are billions of billions of consciousnesses experiencing reality all over the place

this is a semantics argument not a philosophical/ideological/mystical argument

I think there is virtually zero point in applying any thought to this subject. The idea that a persons consciousness or soul transcends into some magical fairy land is, to me, so laughable ridiculous that I don't ever think about it.

From a scientific, biological standpoint the question has already been answered. However the truth isn't want people want to hear, and it's the last thing they want to accept.

you should be thinking less about what happens after death and more about what it is exactly that is "dying"

I think being alive is debatable, so what happens after death is also a mystery.

Right now, my best bet is the Eternal Return.

Quote:

Time is infinite, but the things in time, the concrete bodies, are finite. They may indeed disperse into the smallest particles; but these particles, the atoms, have their determinate numbers, and the numbers of the configurations which, all of themselves, are formed out of them is also determinate. Now, however long a time may pass, according to the eternal laws governing the combinations of this eternal play of repetition, all configurations which have previously existed on this earth must yet meet, attract, repulse, kiss, and corrupt each other again...

--Heinrich Heine

I also think there may be something to the notion of general subjective continuity. Check out this article: http://www.naturalism.org/death.htm

I think arguing over this subject is pointless, it just hurts my head thinking about it. nobody knows where we go when we die, it will always be one of life's many mysteries
