I just had Nutter's Bulk Foods order in a huge bag of Organic Rye Berries for me, they said it should be in next week and should cost around $35 or so. They carry the small bags of Bob's Red Mill organic rye berries as well, guess it would work if you needed some in a pinch.
I had an experience with WBS the other night that made me vow to never touch the stuff again. Can't wait to start using the rye berries for spawn instead.

Well it was a combination of my own fault (soaked the WBS too long) and having a tiny kitchen and utensils that suck for WBS prep. A small kitchen can be very frustrating to prep WBS in, I was attempting to prep 7 quarts worth of WBS and the limited amount of space I have was just getting to me.
That and I despise the smell of fermented WBS. I can't imagine fermented rye berries smell much better, but as long as they don't smell exactly the same as WBS then I'll be a happy camper.
I am about ready to throw the rest of my WBS to the birds and go forward with rye berries once I get them. In the meantime I have been experimenting with rye grass seed and it has worked out well so far. Grass seed is on sale this time of year anyways so it still makes cheap spawn.

I wish you good luck with your endeavors! I myself have never worked with rye, or rye grass seed for that matter. Iv been lucky with WBS I guess I found my own style of prepping WBS and it works good for me.
I am interested in moving to rye berries in the future we shall see how it goes.

to stop your wbs from fermenting just make sure you change your water out a couple times.

I use WBS because it's available in my area.
I've tried RGS once and wasn't happy with the results plus the supplier is way North of my location.
I have yet to locate Rye Barries. When I ask the suppliers if they carry Rye Barries they look at me the same way as all the garden suppliers do when I ask for gypsum.

I have had the exact same problem. WBS has treated me good so far, but I would like to eventually try out Rye berries. If I ever find a feed mill or the like that carries any at a good price ill let you know brother.

What about rye bread? Is that available? Maybe it's a cultural thing.

Just use the Bulk Barn variety of "Wheat Berries", aka "Wheat Kernels" -item #1544 at your local Bulk Barn.
I don't think there is any big difference between "rye berries" and "wheat berries" when it comes to mushrooms.

Not much difference. Those guys could get you a bag of rye if you asked them, btw. They just don't know it.

Anyone know where to get calcium carbonate for doing the 50/50 casing tek? Or is it more convenient to use coir for casing?

I don't use calcium carbonate personally but I think you might find it at home brewery stores.
Whenever I case I use:
50% Peat 50% Vermiculite 1 tablespoon of Drywall Gypsum (calcium sulfate) (more depending on the amount you're making) Water - enough to bring to field capacity

Sorry guys, I know this is Off Topic but wanted to shine some attention on Edible Wedge packs I have up for trade in the market.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13474281
They contain the following wedges:
1 - Lions Mane (Hericium erinaceus) RR Strain 2 - Fungi Perfecti ? Shiitake https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13426489 3 - Hen of the Woods (Grifola frondosa) ?
Have an extra wedge of Grifola frondosa if you want to send it on to a friend.
I am trying to trade for materials/postage so I can continue to give away free genetics to those who want them. PM me if interested or post in the marketplace!
Thanks guys!
