Nice pics auweia. Some of those cyans look pretty orange and almost past ripe. It makes me wonder though. I found a gigantic patch of rotting mushrooms that looked like more orange than brown cyans. I tried to pick one up to get a closer look, and it was maggot filled. I may never know though, it was my first time hunting and I wasn't good at identifying. It was also in a pretty public place.

There was some black plastic tarp (seems common in landscaping) with a few inches of woodchips on top of it. Wonder if it would inhibit cyan growth.

Old rotting cyans are usually black. You can still tell a cyan because the stems will be tough and usually not break

Thanks tahoe. Their gills were very cyanesque but weren't turning black. Maybe someday I'll go back to the spot.

Can anyone confirm for me what type of amanita that is in the photos above?  Also I'm not sure on the boletes with red staining on the stem.  It meets the criteria for a butter according to the book but it just looks a lot darker brown than most pics of butters I've seen.  Any advice would be appreciated!  All those mushrooms there fed 12 people to the brim with beer battered oysters and sauteed porcini bruschetta and a mixed mush pasta that had oysters, porcinis and cauliflower mush that was amazing.  I GIVE THANKS TO THE MUSHROOM GODS FOR THEIR WONDERFUL GIFTS!

is the amanitas stem hollow?
if so your good to go :]
i had amanita coccora a few weeks ago it really is quite delicious ^_^

Here are some pictures from a few local patches. I will be busy for the next few days trying to pick all of these. There are probably close to 5000+ mushrooms. These pictures are from two different area both with multiple patches. These pics don't even show a 2oth of the total patches.

I just got back from my acreage with the patches on them and the problem of picking them all is better or worse than expected. I might have to hire someone to help me clean it out.
Camera battery was dead so I didnt get any pics but I will go back around noon and take pictures

Re: Out the park [Re: auweia]
    #13617073 - 12/11/10 12:03 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I've ventured out of GGP for the past few years but haven't had much luck. This year I'm putting in more time and sort of changing my whole game plan. And it's paying off. Boy is it paying off.

Hunting landscaping and suburban areas is nothing like what I was used to in the park and other grassy areas. Totally different technique, and much more rewarding. It's a little funky being out there on front street, sometimes with the landscapers themselves watching me tromp through their handywork.

It's been said in the past that one of the most common species found in mulched areas is our favorite, and I didn't believe it until this year. It is, quite literally, everywhere. If you look hard enough.
