N.J. man, 72, charged in pot sting October 8, 2010 - app.com
MONTVILLE, N.J. — A 72-year-old Montville man was among four New Jersey residents accused of money laundering and conspiring to traffic California-grown marijuana into the metropolitan area after federal agents seized $2 million in cash and more than 100 kilograms of pot from the men, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman said.
William Mabey Sr. appeared Thursday afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo in U.S. District Court, Newark, alongside Michael Vacchiano, 46, of Weehawken, Cris Rosenvinge, 32, of Parlin and Kenneth Martin, 41, of North Bergen, the others charged in the scheme.
Authorities said the four grew marijuana at a Miranda, Calif., property and shipped the plant to multiple locations in New Jersey and New York by regular mail. The marijuana packages — each containing about 17 to 20 pounds of the drug — were collected from the delivery addresses by the men and transported by privately-owned vehicles to Vacchiano's Weehawken home, the criminal complaint states.
Members allegedly distributed the drugs out of Vacchiano's garage and packed most of the cash they received from selling the drug and mailed them across the country.
The cash was sent to addresses controlled by members of the scheme in the Novato, Calif. area as payment for their work and to finance additional marijuana production, authorities said.
Each of the four defendants is charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute 100 kilograms or more of marijuana and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
If convicted, the maximum potential penalty for the drug offense is 40 years in prison — with a five-year mandatory minimum — and a fine of $2 million or twice the gross gain resulting from the offense, authorities said. The maximum potential penalty for the money laundering offense is 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of twice the gross gain resulting from the offense, authorities said.

that's lame. Grandpa gets 5 years for selling what should be a legal plant. Gimme a break. They need to end pot prohibition for good and all. In time, I expect that it will happen. All the naysaying baby boomers are getting old, and the new facebook generation support pot legalization by huge, huge margins. For some of us, pot legalization will happen in our lifetimes.
