inoculating straw with a liquid culture... possible?
    #1331075 - 02/24/03 09:45 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

a buddy just got ripped on a $500 kit (probably from STP). instead of a substrate like rye, millet, or anything like that, it came with LCIP (liquid culture inoculum powder) which is probably just dextrose or some shit. It says to grow mycelia till liquid is 50% colonized, then pour right onto the straw. Im worried that the huge amount of liquid used will invite contams before the mycelia can take hold, and due to the large size of the kit, that would be really bad. Is it feasible, or should i just use the colonized LCIP to inoculate grain jars?

I've tried dumping a liquid innoculum on straw before, and never gotten anything but contams. Maybe my method was poor, because this was early in my bulk attempts. But, it's the case. I would go with inocculating spawn, like grain, if it were me.

Hit up some rye. But if it came w/ straw too then innoc that using the rye once rye is completely colonized. Straw is cheap 'shit' but no use letting it go to waste.

yeah, a buddy of mine would not listen to good advice and chose to believe the "10lbs a month" line of shit they sell with this product (not STP, BTW). he got nothing but green with repeated attempts. imagine his fucking surprise when he finally tried cakes. i lost contact with him since, I hope he has discovered grain/casing by now.

Ahhh, you know exactly the kit im talking about. Sounds like im just gonna use the "LCIP" to inoculate some jars of birdseed.

Assholes over at mushroom magic have been pimping this crap for far too long as well.
No reputable report of liquid innoc of straw has ever come across my radar. The inherrent problems are likely too great to overcome. 1. the uncolonized nutrient in the liquid will be a contamination vector as soon as it hits the unsterile straw. There is no way for a liquid to be fully colonized like a grain can. 2. Nearly impossible to control moisture concentrations 3. Even application 4. Nutrient supplementation. Most bulk subs benefit greatly from the additional nutrients supplied to them by spawn. This isn't very feasible with liquids.

I'd say that unless you see a detailed and respected report come across the OMC, forget about liquid innocing straw. And mail bags of your feces to any company who propagates such bullshit through our community.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.
