aside from training, I think it is a genetic + environmental thing.

If you smoke, it will change your voice. If you expose yourself to airborne toxins it can do other stuff on a minute scale.
Each person has a different structure on a very small scale. Anyone can sing, but some sound better.

I'd take lessons honestly, I was never too good of a singer...But I've already improved three fold singing only 20 minutes under instruction in my music theory class... it does wonders for your aural skills as well
It only comes natural to some people but I think most have it in them
Also microphones can change your voice/sound quite drastically, as well as whatever was done to the vocals during the recording process.

And I don't think he's a very good vocalist Even on recordings which can be redone again and again for months.
Like I said some people are naturals at using their voice, and others a bit of training helps greatly.

first of all, your opinion is wrong.
second of all. . .neither did this guy. . .
to me, the most important part of vocalization is phrasing. You can even slip in and out of key, but if your phrasing is original, clean, crisp, and moving/building it will come off as natural and 'from the heart' if you catch my drift

i dont know about you guys but im not crazy about super amazing well produced vocals.. i like something to sound more rough and raw. it feels more honest that way.
not to say i dont think guys like Maynard and Freddie Mercury arent amazing.. i just like something a little more "real" for lack of a better word.

Obviously if OP is asking for help he isn't a complete natural.
And how can an opinion be wrong? Frankly I find nirvana - even without vocals - to be disgustingly bad.
