Unknown anise scented gymnopilus/ northeast US
    #13298837 - 10/06/10 01:50 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Habitat:
growing from Birch tree stump

yellowish on smallest specimens, rust on larger/older.

Cap:
1-4inches/3-10cm

Spore print color:
Rust

Bruising:
I tried like hell, but only possibly imagined some greenish hues?

Other information:
definate anise smell but no where near as strong as Big Gym. Similar but much milder taste as Big Gym.

The first two pics are shite from my cell phone.

I made a tea with two fresh ounces and did not notice effects. Also no ill effects. Next test will be with 15 dry grams.

This is only half of what I found. A lot of them were older and infested with googly mooglies.

Oh, and if someone knows the effect of the first frost on young Gymnopilus Junonious mushrooms, please inform. I'd rather harvest them prematurely if it means saving them from rot.

You're welcome but I admit not being confident - Google wasn't saying it's a US thing and I was basing the guess on stature in my (UK) books.  And unlike a lot of Gyms it isn't especially conifer-loving, but the wording is "burnt ground and wood" which probably suggests not stumps.  Not to be confusing or anything.

the only page i've been able to dig up is in italian that contains an image. it suggests it grows from the ground and the cap size reaches only 2 cm. As far as Gyms, this is my first non -Junonius find. The Junonius in New England seems to prefer Maple. This species was on birch.
thanks for your input though.

Sort of fits the bill for G. Luteus, but I don't know much about other New England Gyms. The only reason I have doubts is the non-bluing factor. Hopefully a fellow north east gym freak will see my post!:psychsplit:

Actually, they are all dried now. I found them on Sunday. I didn't do a spore print on paper. The prints on that translucent blue plate is probably the closest thing to a print i got. I assume your asking so as to narrow down the exact species? I know for a fact they are gyms, what species, not so sure. Since they are dried, I also will not be able to get any more detailed photos than what i posted. I may have a couple more i didn't post, but i don't think they show any clearer detail. So.....they are gyms.....not Big Laughing Gyms....thanks..

goback to that patch in two more days and take pics of the mushrooms u left to grow. and next time do it like ido when picking. dont rip the myc out of the ground. let ur patchgrow instead of obiterating it. s for doesing, i usually take a LLAARRGGEE amount compared to when i eat cubes to trip on gyms. i dont use a sale but its prolly about 20g's dry.a

when was the last time you tried them?? for me i need a good week atleast inbetween doses so effects are more vivid!! all good if youve given up on the gyms - they do taste like bitter shit - and if they are active it DOES take a bunch more than other actives to feel effects!!! and they are not at all as crazy as straight psily boomers - the gyms give a reall natural feeling to the trip!!!
Your pics look pretty damn promising tho - and in the fourth one on the right - i can notice the green bruising round the caps curled up margin!! your specimens there also do look quite mature -dropping spores like mad with big caps - remember gyms are best taken when largest size right befor or as the veil is breaking - a bunch of tiny pins is also a good way to get more bang for the weight 4sho!!
Keep hunting man:thumbup::thumbup:
Happy Fall:leafromp:

i do kno just what ya mean there dudenj:super::trippinballs: but ya gotta agree you must eat a BUNCH more than normal psily's - and the gym buzz is soooooo much more relaxing with a natural mellowish feeling! i find no real mind fuck or no real anxiety comes with the gym tea- - - just a bunch of smiling , nasty gym burps and laughter!
it is nutz how they make your whole body feel in total bliss too!!
Glad you put them up there with ovoids - hopefully someday i get to experience the ovoid touch too!!!!

they feel like XTC to me too , people would constantly say wow im not tripping like mushrooms but this feels better then XTC then 10 min later omg the visuals these mushrooms are so good.

the ovoids have a different body buzz too i think theres something extra in them too specially when fresh they feel electric

yo.....hell no, i'm not giving up on Gymnopilus. There's way too many Junonius just waiting to be found in Maine. I just meant whatever type of gyms these were, they didn't do anything. If you read the description of Luteus, they were very close to the description for those. I know they weren't BLG's. And you're right kid, they were a pretty old bunch. They were way past their prime. I may go back to the site and see if there are fresh ones.
So this afternoon i made the tea with 15g. @ 2pm. 15 minutes after i drank the tea i thought i felt a little euphoria, then i fell asleep. Lol. So later i went out to check on some tiny little Junonius pins that were growing out of huge piles of maple chips. They looked like they weren't getting bigger(I think because they were all growing out of small pieces of wood/not big enough to support large mushrooms) Plus it's been getting colder up here so i decided to not let them go to waste. I ate about 8 little pins and i swear i felt more than from that tea. Not much, just a little mini buzz.
There were huge amounts of mycelium growing in these chip/wood piles though......so i'm guessing next year this will be a good spot!:tripmolecule:
So the gyms pictured above are either an inactive gym species (not unlikely) or just really old. I think i'll stick with the maple loving Laughers. Winter is coming, so maybe one more hunt for the Big guy.

If you haven't seen my largest find of super active gyms check em' out.

I checked out that Ovoid thread last night......Amazing:thumbup: hopefully they find themselves travelling to Maine eventually. I'm still holding out hope for Libs up here.

yeah, that's sounds good. I'm kind of obsessive when i start a new hobby and want to learn everything i can. I really just want to know what exact species of Gym they are. Whether they are lutes liquiritaes, something inactive, undiscovered, etc...
If I continue my obsession the reasonable next step would be to get a microscope, take some classes, start trading prints, etc.
or.................I'll just stick to looking for big gyms because they are so easy to find in my region. I'm not 18 anymore, so the urge to trip everyday is long gone. Before i started hunting this year the last time i did was about 6 yrs ago. Probably cubes. I've also become really sensitive to psylly as i've gotten older/accumulated trips. I prefer a subtle onset with eating small amounts over a long period of time as opposed to when i was 18-20 and would gobble down a quarter oz. It's almost like a small amount is the key that unlocks the doors of saved amounts of hallucinogens stored in my brain. I think this is common for a lot of people.
blah blah blah blah... ramble ..ramble.... lol. :hi:
