Turning my closet into a grow room
    #13304002 - 10/07/10 01:22 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

So I've decided to turn my closet into a grow room for the winter.  I will NOT be growing cannabis.  Mostly cacti and succulents.  I have a 600w Hps light, i was just wondering what frequency bulb would be most beneficial for cacti and succulents?  Heres the list of what I will be growing:

T. Bridgessi (i have 7 seedlings that sprouted about 9 months ago)
Khat (i just recently got some cuttings that seem to be doing pretty well)
Morning glories (ill be mounting wire closet shelves sideways along a wall of the closet for them to cling onto)
a bonsai tree
and various other cacti and succulents (check my gallery for pics)
i would also like to start some peppers, tobacco and poppies once i get everything set up

So what frequency light bulb should i get for these particular plants?

Oh yeah, i will be sure to make a grow log with tons of pics once i get everything set up and going.

thanks in advance EG readers,

-waltershabas

whats the size of your closet

becuase a 600 watt will burn it down with out the proper ventilation

Its very roughly 4x4x8. What would you recomend for ventilation. Getting a couple of fans wouldn't be a problem for me.  Is there a good material I could replace the standard wood closet door with? I'm not overly concerner with light leakage as I won't be growing anything commonly know as illegal. ie. Cannabis

600 watt is for a 6x6 area

that closet would need a 400watt but thats pushing it

you dont need the ventilation for the closet exactly but the light its self

they build cool tubes to put the light in and its a wind tunnel , that way it keeps the closet from getting to hot

try getting 2 bathroom exhausts for the closet , but them both at the top sucking air
and put some holes on the bottom to allow air to be pulled in , its called negative ventilation

then get the light a cooling fixture like a cool tube, and a squirrel cage fan , you will need a nice sized fan if you
dont want to burn down your house ,

its going to cost about $400 for proper ventilation, if you dont do it right then start digging your grave
ive seen to many fires because of kids and HPS lights , make sure to have an fire extinguisher also very very close

No, cfl's wont heat up a room, it won't heat up a closet either it'll heat up a small box though.

They are plant's, but the lighting schedules are a bit irrelevant, as are the color bulbs.

Cacti are better grown outdoors, period

I've never gotten growth equivalent to that they get outdoors.

the types of cacti are bridgessi seedlings and a few randoms ive picked up at nurseries over the last couple of years
i would like to keep them outdoors all year long, but i don't think theyll do too well in a minnesota winter

Walter - i have been looking into building a small grow box for the winter, and have been doing some researching on lighting.

Here is a FAQ you might find interesting:

MOD EDIT: No non-vendor links

and these seem like the easiest choice of high frequency fixtures available, $30-40/each depending on length/wattage + they can be linked together and controlled by one switch/timer

MOD EDIT: No non-vendor links

I will be using several of these unless i can find a cheaper multibulb fixture at the grow shops, or squarium classifieds.

Anyways, hope this info helps you.

We would like to think so.  However with all the chemtrails blocking out our sun these days and also getting into the soil the outdoor grown stuff is suffering.
