[NZ] 14 year old stoned on R-18 rated legal high

14 year old stoned on R-18 rated legal high
October 7, 2010 - northernadvocate.co.nz

A Northland mum wants mind-bending herbs banned after her 14-year-old son became addicted to an R18-rated "legal high".

The synthetic marijuana product is a mixture of dried herbs. They usually contain the 1,1-dimethyloctyl homologue of the substance CP 47,497, a synthetic substantially similar to the main active component of cannabis tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

The Expert Advisory Committee on Drugs is looking at the health and safety data on these products and is due to make a recommendation to the Minister of Health next month.

But one Whangarei mum and her son want to warn of the dangers now.

The teenager, who wished to remain anonymous, said that over a six-week period he smoked synthetic cannabis labelled "Marley" or "Dream" and developed a dependency.

While he was asked his age the first time he tried to buy it he was never asked again. Each week he smoked about four times.

"It makes you feel stoned. But the day after I was usually tired and I started hearing voices and was going all schitzo," he said.

"I was using it heaps."

He admitted freely it was probably an easy way to get into harder drugs.

"I was having to have more of it to get the same high.

I would have been keen to try something stronger and maybe illegal."

His habit was revealed when his mother found him stoned at home. She thought his behaviour was out of the norm for him and more than teenage rebellion.

"He was so arrogant and talking about others using drugs ... when really it was him."

She said those selling the products didn't realise how much damage was being done.

"Obviously it's financially driven, but they are frying the brains of the future generation. It shouldn't be for sale. It's an experimental age but it makes addiction very easy and my concern is it's a stepping stone to other drugs."

She said as they spoke to more people about her son's experience the more common she realised the use of legal highs was.

"Parents need to know what their kids could be up to. It might be legal at this stage but it's dangerous stuff."

For two weeks the son has not smoked any of the stuff but has been depressed and still has pangs for the legal high.

NZ Drug Foundation executive director Ross Bell said while the legal highs were rated R18 it was only recommended and not law. They could be sold to anyone who had the cash regardless of age.

It was of concern such products could hit the market without anyone knowing the health impact.

Mr Bell said there was no need to have health warnings on the packets or list the ingredients but retailers should show community responsibility.

"If they are putting an R18 sticker on them they should enforce their own voluntary code."

Northland's Medical Officer of Health Dr Jonathan Jarman said the safest option was not to use the products.

"The trouble with these so-called legal highs is that no one knows what sort of health damage they cause. They are untested substances and are not meant to be smoked," Dr Jarman said.

"They are artificially made by chemists with the aim of making money."

Dr Jarman said it was possible retailers were breaching the Smoke Free Environments Act if they sold herbal cigarettes to people under 18. He would be following up that aspect.

It's like K2 but using CP 47,497 instead of JWH018.

Probably exactly it.  Doesn't want to take responsibility and addiction is a good scapegoat.

LOL you wanted to try something else because you're a druggie and developed a dependency in just 6 weeks.

If you're hearing voices and still using the drug that caused them that's your stupidity on display.

Another lame attempt to invoke the never-proven gateway theory.

I agree, but with a caveat.  In the case of a kid there is no excuse not to know.  BUT, I can and do take JWH tokes with my chick literally in the next room and she has no idea.  So fucking stealth and even if it gets smelled, it doesn't smell like most familiar drugs.  I don't have to hide my JWH use, I just get my balls put in a vice for smoking anything inside the house.

Kids are getting addicted to a lot of other legal things, but that doesn't mean it should be illegal.
Btw, it all smacks of tabloid style "journalism".
