Parents adopting more open attitude to alcohol, drugs and sex [UK]

Parents adopting more open attitude to alcohol, drugs and sex
A third of UK parents see drugs as inevitable part of growing up and most allow children to drink at home from 13, study says
5 October 2010 - The Guardian

British parents are increasingly relaxed about their children drinking alcohol from as young as 10 years old, taking drugs and having sex, according to research released today .

One-third of parents – rising to half of those in London – said they were happy for their children to experiment with cannabis. A similar proportion admitted they were relaxed about all drug-taking, regarding it as an inevitable part of growing up.

One-quarter of Londoners admitted they allowed their children to drink at home from the age of 10, whereas in Northern Ireland 15 was the average age.

The study of more than 3,000 parents across Britain also revealed that most are happy for their child to start having the occasional alcoholic drink at home from the age of 13.

"Sex, alcohol and even drugs are no longer no-go areas for children as far as parents are concerned," said Frank Furedi, professor of sociology at the University of Kent. "The old-fashioned parent is fast becoming a cultural minority as mums and dads do their best to give their kids the freedoms they did not have. Families have become surprisingly open-minded about allowing their children to experiment and find their own way in life.

"Parents understand that society has changed and that it is not the end of the world if their teenager experiments with alcohol or has sex," he added.

Parents were also liberal about homosexuality, with two-thirds saying they would have no problem if their child was gay.

Mothers showed themselves as being far more relaxed, with 76% saying they would be untroubled if their child was gay, – 55% – admitted they would feel uncomfortable if their child was homosexual.

There were also marked difference between mothers and fathers when it came to children drinking alcohol in the survey, commissioned to mark the DVD release of Modern Family.

Fathers are far more relaxed than mothers about drinking, with 17% of men happy with their child drinking at home from the age of 10 compared to just 6% of women. Fathers were also more liberal when it came to drug taking, with 38% seeing it as part of growing up compared to 24% of mothers.

Likely because parents want to drink, do drugs and have sex again too.

I still bet with all that the teens and such will not be overall happier, just more fucked up than ever. Not my kids, but getting relaxed on kids drinking isn't beneficial to their health. This is frankly just parents becoming more passive and less involved.

10? I mean... how can that be good at all? A person is old enough to drink once they are fully developed emotionally (the same for every other drug). That happens for most in their late teens but at 10 is a joke. Kids that young don't need to be getting even a buzz.

In Europe, it's considered normal for the kid to have a beer with dinner. They serve them at pubs, I know that much.

none of this is against you btw tchan909 lol
The times when it was nessacary to drink alcoholic beverages instead of water (unless one wanted massive bowel trouble) is gone. It is like the short story the lottery, continuing an outdated tradition without justification.

I know some parents still believe in the so called "health benefits" of the poison we call alcohol, but if one is to claim that card, why let them eat crap and sugar and such? I always get a headache with parents in Boston and some rich new england areas that do whatever they please instead of thinking of maybe, "huh maybe I shouldn't give my kids drinks, and maybe I should actually talk to them instead of ignoring the issue when they go party as teens."

Passive parents suck, I love mine, but I hated their passive style. Sex, drugs, alcohol, girls, etc, never said a word on it either way. Glad I wasn't brainwashed, but clearly some guidance would have been proper. We shouldn't have kids that raise themselves in critical areas that could destroy their lives.

How young does casual sex have to occur? It is a short term thrill. The more partners a person generally has, the less satisfied they will be when they have to settle down and raise a new generation.

People must be getting silly with 2012 junk, where is all the long term planning?

Not usually until you are 16, unless you are in Bavaria (they served us a .5 liter bottle of beer with every lunch when I was in the army in Bavaria. It's not considered an alcoholic beverage, but a basic food by law there). Most younger kids don't really appreciate the bitter taste of beer, though, and wouldn't want to drink it anyways.

Beer and wine from age 16, liquors and other spirits 18 and over. They will card you. Unless you are accompanied by your parents. If they serve your parents and they give you a glass of beer or wine it will be tolerated.

In England I'm pretty sure they serve beer to the kids with dinner, if they're with their parents, from like age 10 or something.

Anyway I'm not defending the practice. Some people say that familiarizing your kids with alcohol early on and under parental supervision causes drinking to be more responsible later in life, but we all know about alcoholism in Europe.

I believe in empowering young people.  You cannot make choices for them once they turn the corner...  So you may as well teach em all you know, good and bad,  No matter how embarrassing and difficult.  By the teen years they are fully capable of MAKING a CHOICE.  A parent who instills fear will be proven wrong by his buddies.
A parent who instills the truth will always have a child's trust; and the child will have good information to make good choices from.
