Music festivals lead to string of arrests, complaints

STARKS -- Two music festivals that are known for attracting drug activity to the region one weekend a month during the summer, once again, resulted in numerous arrests and noise complaints.

Fifteen people were issued summonses for drug possession or arrested on outstanding warrants and probation violations during traffic stops near the festivals in Starks and Harmony, according to state police Trooper Aaron Turcotte, Skowhegan Troop C Barracks.

The summonses included possession of LSD, hashish, Psilocybin and illegal prescription drugs, Turcotte said.

All the traffic stops that led to arrests and summonses were on New Sharon roads, and no one from western and central Maine was charged, he said.

He was unable to provide names and addresses Monday of those arrested near the festival.

The most heavily attended festival, the Harvest Ball, was at Harry Brown's farm on Abijah Hill Road in Starks. A smaller festival was on Carson Hill Road in Harmony.

Both festivals allow camping from Friday through Sunday, according to state police Lt. Don Pomelow. They feature music, vendors and have been around in some form for almost 20 years, he said.

"Basically, it's a pot festival," Pomelow said.

Although the events are promoted as pro-marijuana events, Pomelow said they also bring in drug users, traffickers and sellers.

The festival in Starks is estimated to have been in violation of the town's mass gathering ordinance, according to Pomelow and Paul Frederic, town selectmen.

Frederic said the town requires groups to secure a permit for mass gatherings of more than 750 people that last longer than 6 hours.

Past festivals at Harry Brown's farm have applied in the past, but have always been denied, Frederic said. Organizers of the weekend festival began an application, but did not complete the process.

Pomelow estimated the festival drew more than 2,000 time during the weekend.

The town selectmen planned to discuss problems caused by the festivals at their Monday meeting. Frederic said residents have complained of the noise and traffic congestion caused by the event.

First year in all my time of going I had seen a problem here...I noticed this past weekend that there ere more people than usual which is why in my opinion there were so many arrests, the town didn't meet proper ordinances to host that many people, which is why they were cracking down...then again ANYONE who knows what the deal is between those 2 festivals also knows why there is so much heat, both Don and Har, are not the closest anymore....lol!

- Great read though TY!!!!
