They are all over the place around here during the spring...they are not dangerous, the bigger ones their praying arms can be a little spiny and poke a bit when they try to 'attack' you with them, but it doesn't pierce skin or anything, a bit scary the first time...but they are cool as fuck...we have walking sticks here too which are always fun looking creatures.
Errr... I gotta raise the BS flag on this one. Praying mantis can bite the shit out of you. I know because I was bitten by this 6 inch female that I caught when I was about 11. There's no venom, but they can definitely break the skin and it definitely hurts.

Yeah their mandibles are designed to chew through the exoskeletons of other insects. I'm sure a big praying mantis can bite you hard enough to make you bleed.

I didn't realize that mantids could break the skin so easily. I've never heard of that happening before so they must be fairly docile towards humans; probably because we're too big to eat.

i lived in greece (northern crete) for most of last year. mantises, mantises everywhere. one time one got in our house and was crawling up our cabinets trying to get on the stove while my now ex wife was cooking her delicious marinara sauce. seeing that i love mantises, i got my swiffer and let him hitch a ride and put him outside. he was a good 5-6" long. if it wasn't the same one i let go, it was one that looked exactly like him who hung out on my steps until the cold weather hit. he would let me pet his head whenever i'd see him. no b/s. i even told the guys installing our pool to leave me alone. i'm sure they thought i was weird. i didn't care. i wish i had taken pics.
i've never heard about them being aggressive though. i personally like them b/c they hunt stuff that i dislike. i've had one try to hang onto my finger before but it didn't hurt. i'm not a bug guy either btw.

Millzy, I was in Greece for a good while, mostly around Thessaloniki. You get to travel the country much? I managed to hitchhike with a watermelon farmer to the Macedonian border for a weekend rave that was full of surprises. Fun stuff.

i was in northern crete, just outside of xania. it was a military move (ex is a civilian employeed by the armed forces) and the difficulties of it put a damper on site seeing.
we did get to see knossos and the capital of crete, irakleon, for nye. i think these are my favorite pics from the experience.

knossos, one of the oldest ruins in the world. believe it or not this is in a suburb of irakleon, which is a city of about a million people.

beautiful place. i miss my life there.
