Morning glory scare October 3, 2010 - glasgowdailytimes.com
Teens ingest seeds
GLASGOW — The Kentucky State Police and the Barren County Sheriff’s Office are checking into a new development in the drug trade, one that involves middle school-aged children.
Two juveniles were taken into intensive care after reportedly ingesting morning glory seeds that have the potential to create a hallucinogenic effect similar to LSD, according to the KSP and the BCSO.
The juveniles have been released from the ICU, according to the sheriff’s office, but the KSP is beginning its investigation into the hospitalizations.
“We’re checking into it and working with every agency we can to figure this out,” said Trooper Charles Swiney, public information officer for the KSP Post 3 in Bowling Green.
KSP will be working with children’s services, however currently no parents are suspected to be involved, Swiney said. Investigators are also trying to find out if the children were hospitalized because of the intoxicating effects of the seeds or because of a pesticide coating put on the seeds when they are produced for planting.
Law enforcement officials are learning as much as they can about the seeds, which juveniles are apparently ingesting or putting in sports drinks, Barren County Sheriff Chris Eaton said.
“We’ve had about eight to 10 calls from concerned parents of middle school students and one call from a high school student’s parents,” Eaton said. “It’s a major concern for us because of the LSD-type symptoms and that they sell these seeds in stores. It’s all new to us.”
Since receiving the calls beginning Thursday morning, Eaton and the sheriff’s office have been researching the seeds and any occurrence of the seeds being used as drugs. They have contacted the United States Drug Enforcement Agency for more information as well. From what he’s seen, the children seem to be picking up the seeds from the wild, but it’s hard to tell.
Barren-Edmonson Drug Task Force director Jeff Scruggs said he’s heard of the hallucinogenic effects of the seeds, but didn’t yet know much else since they are a new substance to arrive on the scene. But he’s seen similar drugs pop up in the same way: plants in numerous gardens used experimently because of their effects.
“There’s been stuff around for a while. It’s very hard to control everything,” Scruggs said. “They just figure it out, but often [experimenters] read something on the Internet or somewhere else and it circulates and there you are.”
As far as the two children who were hospitalized, the state police will interview connected people in the case and determine whether there will be any charges in the case. The most likely would be trafficking or unlawful transaction with a minor, if any. They are hoping the children will be able to tell them where they got the seeds and how they found out about the potential drug effects. If any other victims are discovered in the process of interviews, they will deal with those when they arise, Swiney said.
“Evidently some kids have heard about it and all we can say to them is if it doesn’t sound like a good idea, it’s not,” Swiney said.
Eaton said as far as he knows this is an isolated incident.
“You just never know and families are concerned, so we’re looking into it. You never know what it’s going to be in five years or in 10 years with [drugs],” Eaton said.
Eaton urged anyone who has concerns or would like to know more to call him or the sheriff’s office.

Oh please. Kids have been eating those things to get a buzz since the 60's, if not before. This is not another crack "crisis".

Morning glory, datura, and amanitas are among a list of natural drugs that will probably never be illegal... at least not anytime soon.

yeh this isnt new, its not dangerous, and it sucks so bad it will never be very popular. me n my friends ate plenty of mg seeds in early hs and nothing happens except you get real fucked up (not a very good fucked up!) and spend the whole next day in bed with a terrible trippy hangover. and that part about mixing it into like gatorade, total bs. Ground mg is like sandy mud when mixed with water that tastes like poison, its one of the foulest things ive ever consumed, and thats saying something. after youve done it once you develop such a repulsion its nearly impossible to do again, its worse than cactus or ayahuasca, or anything really. so yeah the powers that be need to step back and reexamine the situation, because imo if there was a gun to my head, I would rather huff gasoline than eat morning glory seeds again. srry bout the rant but im sooo tired of the weekly "new" drug scare and this just takes the cake.

Their legal cause they make your stomach feel like hell, its like choking yourself for a buzz, it is not worth it, plus there are substances in the seeds that are toxic, i won't go into details, but it is best to avoid them. They are AWESOME looking flowers when you grow it as a vine. Just grow it, don't eat it and don't make it illegal.
